Klaus Pohl holds a full professorship for Software Systems Engineering at the Institute for Computer Science and Business Information Systems (ICB) at University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany and an adjunct-professorship at the University of Limerick, Ireland. From 2005 to 2007 he acted as the funding scientific director of Lero, the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre. He received his Ph.D. and his habilitation in computer science from RWTH Aachen, Germany.Pohl is author/coauthor of more than 250 peer-reviewed publications as well as several textbooks. As a consultant, assessor, and expert, he supports reputable companies, research institutions, and public funded research programs.

The "fundamentals" part in its title is totally true, it covers the foundation level of requirements engineering, no less, no more. Though there are plenty of topics and concepts in this book, I think it does not go deep into any of them, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I rate this book with 4 stars because it was all I had to study to pass the CPRE FL exam, so it served its purpose. However, it's not the book I'd recommend to someone who was looking for a practice guide or learn more about RE than the average people in the industry. All the examples in the book, including the UML diagrams, are for dummies, that's annoying.

About the Author

Sharon M. Ravitch, Ph.D. is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education where she is Research Co-Director at the Center for the Study of Boys’ and Girls’ Lives and a Founding Co-Director of Penn’s Inter-American Educational Leadership Network. She serves as the Principal Investigator of Semillas Digitales (Digital Seeds) a multi-year applied development research initiative in Nicaragua (http://www2.gse.upenn.edu/nicaragua/).

Ravitch’s research integrates across the fields of qualitative research, education, applied development, cultural anthropology, and human development and has four main strands: (1) Practitioner Research as a means to engendering sustainable professional and institutional development and innovation; (2) International applied development research that works from participatory and action research approaches (projects currently in the US, Nicaragua, and India); (3) Ethnographic and participatory evaluation research; and (4) Leader education and professional development.

Ravitch has published three books: Reason and Rigor: How Conceptual Frameworks Guide Research (with Matthew Riggan, Sage Publications, 2012); School Counseling Principles: Diversity and Multiculturalism (American School Counselor Association Press, 2006) and Matters of Interpretation: Reciprocal Transformation in Therapeutic and Developmental Relationships with Youth (with Michael Nakkula, Jossey-Bass, 1998).

Ravitch earned two master’s degrees from Harvard University in Human Development and Psychology and in Education and a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in an interdisciplinary program that combined anthropology, sociology, and education.�

Nicole Mittenfelner Carl�is a doctoral candidate in the teaching, learning, and leadership division at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education (PennGSE). She is Director of Impact Assessment for the Center for the Study of Boys’ and Girls’ Lives (CSBGL) and is conducting a multi-sited, multi-year participatory evaluation of the Center’s impact. Carl facilitates and teaches Youth Participatory Action Research and researches ways that schools can be more equitable and humane places as a part of her work with CSBGL. Carl is also a graduate research associate at PennGSE, where she is part of a research team that examines ways that teachers and parents can organize and act collectively as a means of educational problem-solving.

Carl has conducted qualitative research for over a decade. She has published articles about new teachers’ experiences with standardized curricula as well as about teacher activism and organizing. Her current research focus includes critical approaches to qualitative research, participatory action research, educational equity, urban education, and teacher education.

Carl is a former middle school language arts and lead teacher in the School District of Philadelphia as well as a former mentor to and supervisor of first-year teachers. Carl’s research interests stem from her experiences as an educator, and she focuses her work on ways that students, parents, and teachers can work together to address educational inequities.�

A Graduate Student Must Have

This book exceeded my expectations. It’s accessible and honest about the intricacies of qualitative design never underestimating its importance in bolstering the research process. The authors are adeptly clear and succinct, particularly when it comes to how to develop a conceptual framework often confounding in other texts I have read. The tables are extremely useful; they will not only generate conversations but entire reflection sessions with your students/classmates. You’ll want to have this resource handy whether it’s teaching a class or course in qualitative research or writing your dissertation.

About the Author

Edward Steichen was an American photographer, painter, designer, and curator. Born in 1879, Steichen emigrated from Luxembourg to the United States with his family in 1881. Steichen began as a self-taught photographer and gained recognition after his work was discovered by photographers Clarence H. White and Alfred Stieglitz. Steichen’s work was often featured in Stieglitz’s influential magazine Camera Work. In 1947, Steichen became the director of MoMA’s photography department. Undoubtedly his most influential and popular exhibition as director was the 1955 show The Family of Man. Carl Sandburg was an American writer, poet, and editor. He was the recipient of three Pulitzer Prizes: one for a biography of Abraham Lincoln and two additional for his poetry. Hailed as a poet whose work connected to a plurality of experiences, Sandburg provided a prologue well suited for Steichen’s universalizing photo narrative.

Absolutely beautiful photo collection. I heard about this collection through a photography art history course and had to find the book. Now it's a fantastic coffee table book and its compelling collection ranges from influential photographers in the early years of artistic photography.

Scott Jesse has worked for Oracle since 1996 and is currently Customer Support Senior Manager for the RAC Assurance Team. He has served as the Global Team Lead and as a member of the Advanced Resolution and Escalations team within Oracle Support. Scott is the coauthor of Oracle Database 10g High Availability with RAC, Flashback, and Data Guard and Oracle9i for Windows 2000 Tips & Techniques, both from Oracle Press.

Bill Burton joined Oracle in 1998 and is currently a member of the Development RAC Assurance Team. He co-wrote and presented the “Upgrading to 11gR2” session at Oracle OpenWorld 2010.

Bryan Vongray is a member of the RAC Assurance Team within Oracle Global Customer Support. He specialized in Oracle High Availability with specific focus on Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), Oracle Data Guard, Oracle Streams, backup and recovery, and Oracle Grid Control. Bryan has planned and implemented Oracle HA Solution for several high profile Oracle customers.

Great Practical Reference

This book covers a lot of technical ground in a concise, well-written manner. This is far from a regurgitation of the Oracle documentation. The authors do a great job of showing how Oracle database features work together to cover HA, DR, and data protection needs. I like the practical "workshop" sections throughout the book-- they help you understand the features by doing examples. They build upon each other as you progress, covering the whole architecture.

I recommend this book highly for your reference collection, specifically for it's worthy how-to nature. It will get you going and you can use the 11g documentation to dig deeper where desired.

Excellent primer for the new 11gR2 Grid and RAC infrastructure

As a long time Oracle RAC DBA (version 8 OPS), I enjoyed reading this book and putting the tips into practice. It is a great starting point for DBAs new to the 11gR2 Grid architecture who need to support
and manage RAC environments. Some nice touches include the coverage of Oracle VM for virtualizing RAC as well as tips for architecting 11gR2. While it is not as deep as other RAC books such as Oracle 11g Real Application Cluster Essentials (PACKT Press) and Oracle 11g RAC (Apress), the book does a fantastic job of teaching beginners new to 11gR2 RAC.

One of the best overview books I have read

Simple:
- it covers a lot of very important big topics
- it gives a long-running hands-on lab as an example
- it is written well
- it gives advice and justifications for its take on 'best practices'

Each topic is complicated. No, the book does not cover every part of every topic. But it gives a great overview and makes the DBA pro wanting more.

On May 11 1985, fifty-six people died in a devastating fire at Bradford City's old Valley Parade ground. It was truly horrific, a startling story – and wholly avoidable – but it had only the briefest of inquiries, and it seemed its lessons were not learned.

Twelve-year-old Martin Fletcher was at Valley Parade that day, celebrating Bradford's promotion to the second flight, with his dad, brother, uncle and grandfather. Martin was the only one of them to survive the fire – the biggest loss suffered by a single family in any British football disaster.

In later years, Martin devoted himself to extensively investigating how the disaster was caused, its culture of institutional neglect and the government's general indifference towards football fans' safety at the time. This book tells the gripping, extraordinary in-depth story of a boy's unthinkable loss following a spring afternoon at a football match, of how fifty-six people could die at a game, and of the truths he unearthed as an adult. This is the story – thirty years on – of the disaster football has never properly acknowledged.

About the Author
Martin Fletcher was 12 years old when he survived the Bradford fire in which his father, brother, uncle and grandfather were all killed. As an adult he has devoted himself to investigating and seeking the truth about the disaster, and this book is the culmination of his extensive research. During that time he has also obtained a BA in Politics with International Studies and MA in International Political Economy from the University of Warwick, together with both the LPC and ACA. He lives in London.

Loved this book, and learned a lot

Not from Bradford, or even England, but I loved this book. Fascinating and awful story, really engrossing, quick read.

Shocking story of fire at a soceer stadium causing panic, resulting in overly crowded exit area that caused many people their lives. Although the story retains your interest, the writer (a child survivor at the time) isn't quite as polished as you might prefer), hence 4 stars. It's a sad story of loss and the effect it had on the survivors as well as the families of the victims.

Awesome summary. The first half is his personal experience of the fire and the second is a more grown-up and in depth analysis of the probable true cause of the fire and illustrates the big fat hurry the inquiry was in to close it.
