Through Family Programs, Al-Anon, reading, and learning from her mistakes, Sandy discovers that sometimes love means doing nothing, and that Letting Go is not the same thing as giving up. She also learns that she needs to work on surviving her son's addiction while coming to terms with the fact that he may not.
Years pass. Friends and family no longer ask about Joey; they no longer know what to say.�Joey is not in recovery, but Sandy works on hers, trying to keep the poison that is consuming Joey from destroying the rest of her family and her life. She starts a program to teach young men living in a group home how to budget, grocery shop, and cook, hoping that someone will someday help her own son in some way that she cannot. I received this book on friday and had it read by saturday. I am a juvenile probation officer and work with lots of kids that are addicts. This book put a lot of things in perspective for me and I know that anyone that reads it will only gain knowledge and better understand the disease. A Must-Read for parents

For those of us who've wrestled with the anguish of loving a child bent on self-destruction, this mother’s story is a “must read.” Sandra Swenson’s oldest son, Joey, is such a child. Like many of us, Sandra missed the signs of addiction in her young son. She attributed his loss of interest in school, his growing hostility, volatile anger, and hateful behavior to teenage angst. Like most of us, she struggled to help her son deal with what she believed were simply behavioral and emotional issues without realizing that beneath Joey’s behavior lurked the twin monsters of alcohol and drugs. Even when Joey’s actions strained the family’s emotional stability and drained their resources, Sandra kept trying to help her son. She stuck with him as he crashed cars, OD’d, and attempted suicide. For years, she believed that with the right placement and understanding, Joey would rise from his self-imposed hell. It took years for Sandra to realize that she could not save her son. That loving him meant letting go. She concludes the book without knowing what lies ahead for her son. This is not a happy story, but it carries a powerful message. While our children might move into a place where we can no longer follow, we must not blame ourselves for our failure to save them. Our children, much as they might blame us, must assume responsibility for their choices. Their lives depend on it.

Riveting book that speak to anyone who wants a better understanding of the heartbreak of loving an addict but not the addiction.
By I love a good read
This book is a must read for any family struggling with addiction and for the rest of us too. Sandra Swenson is the kind of mom we all can relate to - just a "regular" parent trying her best to raise two sons. Her struggle as she comes to terms with Joey's addiction including the numerous "second chances" (and third and fourth and fifth) brought home to me the pain and heartbreak in loving an addict. There is so much media attention about addiction; this book really taught me what it is like to have to come to the heartbreaking realization that a loved one is addicted and how powerless a parent can feel when confronted with a child in the throes of addiction. I recommend it for everyone because everyone knows at least someone who is either struggling with addiction or who is struggling to come to terms with the fact that a family member is addicted.
