Metropolis, by Thea von Harbou

Thea von Harbou's Metropolis is one science fiction classic everyone should read. Her visionary novel has been compared to such prophetic classics as Samuel Butler's Erewhon, Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward, H. G. Wells' When the Sleeper Wakes, Karel Capek's RUR, and George Orwell's 1984. Contemporary comparisons have been made to Samuel Delaney's Triton, Dan Simmons' Hyperion, Peter F. Hamilton's The Reality Dysfunction, and Greg Egan's Permutation City. "The language [of the book] is sometimes as theasuric as Shiel, as Kaleidoscopic as Merritt, as bone-spare as Bradbury, as poetic as Poe, as macabre as Machen," writes Forrest Ackerman.

Metropolis paints a stunning picture of the city of the future. At the top of the social pyramid, those who own the city's buildings and businesses live idyllic lives devoted to the pursuit of pleasure; while at its bottom are the workers who live a hellish existence, laboring like robots in its factories, dwelling with their gaunt, stunted children in the everlasting gloom of underground barracks. Fighting to right these inequities are two lovers: Freder, son of the master and builder of Metropolis, who is shocked to social conscience when he glimpses the squalor and hopelessness amid which his father's workers live; and Maria, who encourages the workers to stand united for their rights while following a path of non-violent resistance. Filled with unforgettable images from Joh Fredersen's headquarters, the New Tower of Babel, rearing high above the gleaming spires of Metropolis to the pleasure city, Yoshiwara, whose name flares across the skies to the factories where workers slave before machines that resemble a pantheon of the world's gods to the evil robotrix, Parody, with the eyes of a Madonna and lips of deadly sin, whose carnal dance inspires the workers to revolt ... Metropolis is an unforgettable, must-read book.

From the Back Cover

This city of the future encompasses two worlds: that of the hedonistic ruling class and that of a segregated subculture, toilers in a mechanized underworld who labor to provide the rich with their pleasures. When a charismatic leader arises, she seeks a savior to unite the disparate social orders. "Between the brain that plans and the hands that build," she declares, "there must be a mediator―the heart."
Thea von Harbou, creator of the screenplay for Fritz Lang's iconic 1927 film, wrote this novel to expand upon the movie's ideas and concepts. Vivid in description, rich in characterization and symbolism, the story draws upon ancient myths to form a compelling vision of the future. Noted science-fiction authority Forrest J. Ackerman hailed the book as "a work of genius," and a century after its initial publication Metropolis continues to captivate readers.

Movie Better Than the Book
By Jeanne D
Having seen the silent film, I have always wanted to read the book. Now that I have read it, I believe the film is much better. The book is a little verbose at times so it got a little tiring to read. This is one to take a break from, then pick it up later. However, if you love the film, then you should read it. It does make some things in the film make more sense.

Not worth the price.
By Maestro of Culture
Just received this book, and was soon not particularly satisfied. There are a number of photos that are included showing sets, actors, etc. Most are of poor quality - faded, or not sharply focused. Not sure if it is the printing process they used for the book, or the original source photo material that was used. The introduction by F.J. Ackerman is 2 pages and is basically fluff. This is completely over-priced for what you get. If the paper was high quality instead of thin ordinary printer paper that you use at the office, and the photos were reproduced well - even then, maybe it MIGHT be worth it. Just buy a far cheaper version that doesn't say "75th Anniversary Edition" on it, and save yourself $10 or more. This is frankly a rip-off.

Poorly Edited and Unformatted - DO NOT BUY
By Zachary
I purchased this book because it was the cheapest version of Metropolis available. Unfortunately, the publisher cut corners at every possible opportunity. The book is completely unformatted, so that chapters don't link up to the table of contents and there's no division between chapters. Additionally, the punctuation is often missing. Occasionally spaces and entire words are missing as well. This version is almost stunningly unpolished, and I can't recommend it to anyone regardless of the price.
