If he weren't such a good action writer, Rollins might make a dynamite climatologist. Each of his thrillers has featured as a central character an extreme environment, most recently the Arctic ice (Ice Hunt, 2003) and now the hot sands of Saudi Arabia. But while Rollins writes settings and scenes that sizzle, what's caught in the heat are usually familiar characters grappling with far-fetched threats, and so it is here. Just the right amount of sand...

I totally dislike sand. It’s gritty and grimy. When the wind blows sand all about it gets in your hair, eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. The only good place for sand is on a beach. I wasn’t sure I wanted to read a book titled “SANDSTORM” with depictions of sand, sand, and more sand being blown all about somewhere in the sandy Middle East.
However, the fact of the matter was I got hooked with bizarre thoughts of a plot involving antimatter—especially since I read a wee bit of antimatter can make a big bang.
James did a good job of telling a compelling story. He didn’t over do the sand and storm parts, but used it rather nicely as a timely part of the plot. His balance of science was just about right. He did a masterful job of blending the here and now of modern day with an ancient time eons ago when Mother Earth was much younger. I especially liked the look behind the scenes provided by his Author’s Notes when he separates fact from fiction.

Great first Sigma Force novel.
Mr. Rollins has a great gift; Utilizing his narrative talent, he combines scientific fact, history, and adventure into amazing stories.
His books are like a combination of Indiana Jones, Dan Brown, Michael Crichton, and Clive Cussler...on steroids!
Once I get in to the meat of the adventure, I cannot put it down.
While the characters may not be the most three-dimensional, they all work!
I loved the concept behind this first Sigma Force Novel.
Buried forbidden cites, evil coalitions, potential catastrophic cataclysmic events, religious history..it really DOES NOT get any better than this!

New favorite series. I am obsessed with these books as they blend history, mystery, science, magic, and just a touch of romance, but definitely not a maim component. I can't read them fast enough.
