Excellent beginners' guide to Ethics

Mel Thompson's "Understand Ethics" is exactly what it advertises itself to be, a beginner-friendly introduction to classic ideas and discussions in the study of ethics. The layout of the book is excellent: topics are presented in a natural order, followed by related ideas put forth by classic philosophers (Kant, Hume, Hobbes, Nietzsche, etc.) and connections to modern day events and debates. The 2010 revision adds some reflections on more current events, including the recent economic crisis. Thompson adds a few opinions of his own, particularly in the conclusion, but they are always clearly delineated and well explained. All-in-all, I was very happy with the book and surprised to see that it had not been reviewed yet. If you're looking for a well written launchpad into Ethics that takes into account modern-day culture, look no further.

Super readable

So ethics is a strange subject, not least because people equivocate it with cultural customs or the law much of the time. Understand Ethics: A Teach Yourself Guide does a fantastic job of disambiguating the term (ethics) from law, custom, habit, and religion. It provides real life examples from newspaper articles to discuss ethics in a real world context. It makes the subject matter digestible and likeable and possibly even enjoyable.
