Absolutely hilarious! I've been a fan of Raydio G since he along with his group HotStylz released a hit song with rapper Yung Joc titled "Lookin' Boy." The book touches on a lot of areas, not just relationships but life. His writing style is both humorous and informative. Also, this is a book for both men and women. 2 thumbs up. I will definitely buy the next book.

This work offers a convincing and dispassionate assessment of an emotionally charged subject: court-ordered school desegregation in Boston and, most particularly, the white backlash associated with it. Calling the conflict a "war that nobody won," Formisano ( The Transformation of Political Culture: Massachusetts Parties, 1780s-1840s ) examines the social and economic roots of what he terms "reactionary populism," concluding that more than simple racism underlay it. Class was an important issue, as evidenced by the frustration of city residents dictated to by legislators and members of the media whose own children attended schools in the "lily white suburbs," beyond the reach of the controversial desegregation plan. He describes the variety of white responses to the court order, for example, South Boston's collective hard-core resistance in marches and clashes with police and West Roxbury's more individualist (white flight) and legalist approach. Here, too, are the public characters, such as Boston School Councillor Louise Hicks, and the street theater of protest, such as a mothers' prayer march led by Hicks counting her rosary beads.

Sailing in the wake of Common Ground , J. Anthony Lukas's prize-winning study of Boston's busing crisis ( LJ 8/85), Formisano focuses upon the white antibusers who, he believes, were more diverse in motivation and tactics than the rock-throwing mobs on television. Using interviews, press accounts, and the enormous secondary literature, he argues, as have Lukas and others, that race and class were knotted together in this "war nobody won." Formisano writes with empathy for the antibusers yet doesn't dismiss their racism; he finds little to praise between both sides' principals and concludes that school desegregation must confront "suburban residential apartheid." Lukas's journalistic tour de force is still the book to read on busing in Boston, but this, the most accessible scholarly work, may be the book to study. It is recommended for most academic and many public libraries.

Interesting account of a controversial and turbulent time

Ronald Forminsano has presented a fascinating look at the famous Boston busing crisis of the 1970's. He does a good job of establishing the basic facts and identifying the major players in the crisis. He gives a penetrating look at Judge Arthur Garrity who mandated that the South Boston white students be bused to Roxbury and the black students from Roxbury be bused to South Boston.

This mandate was very controversial from the beginning. President Gerald Ford spoke out as thinking the move was ill-advised. Boston mayor Kevin White tried his best to implement the judge's decision. He had his hands full with vocal opponents like Louise Day Hicks, John Kerrigan, and Pixie Palladino.

Formisano points out that there was a populist backlash from the residents of South Boston. Parents resented the fact that their children were selected for integration. The situation on the ground was turbulent as white students were persecuted in the black community and vice versa.

Formisano admitted that there were some problems with the mandate. However, he generally supported the plan as a means to establish overdue integration of the districts. The problem is that South Boston and Roxbury families were chosen to be pawns in a war that was not of their choosing. I believe that people have the right to receive and education in the region where they live. Roxbury and South Boston were not able to effectively protest the move because the residents were from a low socio-economic level and were not able to establish influential connections.

Roxbury and South Boston were arbitrary sources for Judge Garrity's social engineering experiment. Boston suburbs like Newton and Wellsley are lily-white and were even more in need of an influx of racial diversity. These wealthy and well-connected communities were not forced to integrate. The parents in those districts would have likely fought integration efforts with passion. However, these same "enlightened" parents were often proponents of the busing policies. As long as it did not effect their children, they supported the mandate. I find this to be very hypocritical and that the mandate unfairly discriminated against poorer students and families.

In the end, the busing policy did not benefit whites or blacks. A whole generation of students suffered the scars of being on the front line of this highly-politicized battle. I have friends who lived throught the crisis and they almost unanimously tell me that this policy was a complete disaster and a failed social experiment.

There was need for communities to integrate. There is no denying this fact. However, the integration could have occurred in a less-intrusive manner. For example, the METCO program is more voluntary and has enabled African-American children to broaden their horizons and have opportunities that would not ordinarily available. White communities benefit from the diversity in such instances. This was not the case in the Boston busing crisis. No one was the winner in this failed social experiment.

Overall, I liked Formisano's book. He outlined the basic information of the case. He argued the pros and cons of the controversy. He identified the supporters and opponents of the mandate with clarity. I disagree with his overall position, but I found the work to be heartfelt and sincere. The book was well-written and I learned a lot about this controversial period in Boston history that became a national news story in the contentious 1970's.

My Mother is on the cover!

A relative found this book and called me to take a look at it. That is definitely my mother Mazie Boulet, on the cover.
The little boy was with someone else that was cut out of the picture.
She was in Washington on a march to Stopping Forced Busing with other mothers of all races from Boston's multiple communities. It was raining buckets.
The facts in the book were NOT very accurate. My mom went though and made side notes of corrections. LOL!!
The man that wrote it is not even from Boston, he's in Florida.
My mother loved it as a present though.

A fact based and necessary argument is made

I give it four stars just for the courage to write it. In today's climate, you're considered a bigot if you dare challenge the PC left narrative, mainly because that seems to be their only argument - "oh you're being mean!" Facts matter and the author cites facts. Now, it's probably fair to say wonder if he has presented a balanced argument, which used to be the standard for writing a book, but in what passes these days for public debate, the left has made their argument over and over, so it would be redundant for Taleeb to do so. The difference is he cites facts. The left's argument is largely based on emotion and so it must rely on the rallying cry that anyone who doesn't wear the ribbon of their argument is axiomatically a racist. And, since Taleeb is black, I'm sure he's considered an Uncle Tom as well. That's all the left has, it seems, is name calling and identity politics. Name calling and identity politics have lifted no one out of poverty, has not made the inner city safer for the largely good people who live there and just want to live their lives in peace, and has produced no solutions except a call for revenge (for what I don't know).

That said, were it not for the courage to take this side of the argument on, I'd have to rate it a bit lower. The writing style is a bit tedious after a while. His repetitive approach seems intended to simply add pages unnecessarily or to explain what a statistic means over and over, which is a bit insulting to the reader.

He could have also rounded out his argument with a bit more tidiness. His second point, aside from the simple fact that the grievance industry diminishes the public discourse with their lies, is the horror of so many inner city, innocent, folks that have lost their lives and these, as he puts it, unqualified lives are the true tragedy. Some punk, black or white, who can't follow the most basic rules of society and puts himself or herself in a position where law enforcement has to make a split second decision is of little concern because the punk has made the choice for him/herself. The tragedy is the person caught in the crossfire who never got to make a decision. His question, correctly, is when are we going to start talking about those lives? When are our feckless leaders going to start attending THEIR funerals?

Informative and True

Anyone wanting to know the real motives behind the Black Lives Matter movement and the reason that liberals, progressives and the Democratic Party keep racism in the forefront of society's consciousness need only to read this book and it will become painfully clear how political correctness in the form of race victimization has destroyed this country.

Wow what an eye opener...the author Taleeb Starkes has got some guts to tell the truth and I loved his sarcasm...our law-abiding group in St Louis call it the "Ferguson Lie" and he nailed it...I'm buying a half dozen and giving them out to the folks I know who have swallowed the Kool-aid

About the Author

Lizabeth A. Allison is Chancellor Professor of Biology at the College of William & Mary. She received her Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Washington, specializing in molecular and cellular biology. Before coming to William & Mary, she spent eight years as a faculty member at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. Liz teaches introductory biology for majors and upper-division molecular biology courses. She has mentored graduate students and more than 100 undergraduate research students, many of them coauthoring papers with her on intracellular trafficking of the thyroid hormone receptor in normal and cancer cells. The recipient of numerous awards, including a State Council for Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV) Outstanding Faculty Award in 2009, Liz received one of the three inaugural Arts & Sciences Faculty Awards for Teaching Excellence in 2011, and a Plumeri Award for Faculty Excellence in 2012. In addition to her work on this text, she is author of Fundamental Molecular Biology, now in its second edition, with a third edition underway.

Michael Black received his Ph.D. in Microbiology & Immunology from Stanford University School of Medicine as a Howard Hughes Predoctoral Fellow. After graduation, he studied cell biology as a Burroughs Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellow at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England. His current research focuses on the use of molecules to identify and track the transmission of microbes in the environment. Michael is a professor of Cell & Molecular Biology at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, where he teaches introductory and advanced classes for majors in cell biology and microbiology. In addition to his teaching and research activities, Michael serves as the director of the Undergraduate Biotechnology Lab, where he works alongside undergraduate technicians to integrate research projects and inquiry-based activities into undergraduate classes.

Jeff Carmichael received his B.S. in Biology from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania and his Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of Georgia. As an undergraduate student, he spent some time studying enzyme kinetics through a fellowship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. His graduate work focused on sexual reproduction in an intriguing group of seed plants. He has been teaching and coordinating Introductory Biology at the University of North Dakota for more than 20 years. He also serves in the Office of Instructional Development where he helps other faculty members incorporate evidence-based best teaching practices in their courses. He has received excellence in teaching awards at UND and as a graduate student in Georgia. His revision of Unit 6 and part of Unit 5 of the Sixth Edition is his first foray into textbook writing.

Scott Freeman received a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Washington and was subsequently awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular Evolution at Princeton University. He has done research in evolutionary biology on topics ranging from nest parasitism to the molecular systematics of the blackbird family and is coauthor, with Jon Herron, of the standard-setting undergraduate text Evolutionary Analysis. Scott is the recipient of a Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Washington and is currently a Senior Lecturer in the UW Department of Biology, where he teaches introductory biology for majors, a writing-intensive course for majors called The Tree of Life, and a graduate seminar in college science teaching. Scott’s current research focuses on how active learning affects student learning and academic performance.

Greg Podgorski received his Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Penn State University and has been a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Plank Institute for Biochemistry and Columbia University. His research interests are in biology education, developmental genetics, and computational biology. Greg’s most recent work has been in mathematical modeling of how patterns of different cell types emerge during development and how tumors recruit new blood vessels in cancer. Greg has been teaching at Utah State University for more than 20 years in courses that include introductory biology for majors and for nonmajors, genetics, cell biology, developmental biology, and microbiology, and he has offered courses in nonmajors biology in Beijing and Hong Kong. He’s won teaching awards at Utah State University and has been recognized by the National Academies as a Teaching Fellow and a Teaching Mentor.�

Kim Quillin received her B.A. in Biology at Oberlin College summa cum laude and her Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley as a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow. Kim has worked in the trenches with Scott Freeman on every edition of Biological Science, starting with the ground-up development of the illustrations in the first edition in 1999 and expanding her role in each edition, always with the focus of helping students to think like biologists. Kim currently teaches introductory biology at Salisbury University, a member of the University System of Maryland, where she is actively involved in the ongoing student- centered reform of the concepts-and-methods course for biology majors. Her current research focuses on the scholarship of teaching and learning with an emphasis on visual model-based reasoning as a science process skill.��

Emily Taylor earned a B.A. in English at the University of California, Berkeley followed by a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Arizona State University, where she conducted research in the field of environmental physiology as a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. Excellent Book (but don't buy the accompanying study guide)

I just took BIO 180 at the University of Washington for which this book was required. I have to say that although this was an expensive book, it is more than worth the money dropped. You can use it for all of the introductory Biology courses (180, 200, 220) and it's also a great book for satisfying personal curiosities about other topics in biology.

The best part about this book is that it is impeccably organized and thorough. You will not get lost in dry, confusing blocks of text and there are chapter summaries which are great to include in your notes. I used the book extensively for the course that I took. As I continue through the series I will definitely hold onto this book.

One quick note: the study guide is virtually a repetition of the chapter summaries and was not that helpful, so don't waste money on that. :o)

Used it for Introductory Biology - UW Seattle

Great book. Really enjoyed it. For a science textbook, it's not that "word-y." I actually had the Professor who is the author, and how he teaches is kind of like what this book does: it seeks to clarify, not muddle; brevity and concise for maximum understanding. Also has great illustrations. I wouldn't completely rely on only this textbook to learn everything about Biology, but this is a great start.

Also for future UW students: No, I did not have to buy MasteringBiology. That was completely optional. Clickers were more important than MasteringBiology. MasteringBiology is not Alex/Connect Plus.

I love this text!

I've only been using this book for 2 weeks and I already enjoy it, which is a big thing to say for a textbook. The last general bio book I had was full of information that drowned out the overall point each section within the chapter was trying to bring. It was full of biochem and technical talk that wasn't needed for this level of class.

Freeman's book brings a refreshing approach to writing about biology. Each chapter and section within each chapter, provides the student with the "meat and bones" of what they need to know. It's not hard to comprehend the take home message and to see how each little component adds up to make a larger component. This book has made me love biology again and understand why I returned to school. Good job Scott Freeman!

Greatest Workbook on Sexual Addiction Recovery

Solid Biblical Insights to set men free

We were made to live from the heart, but sadly most people don't. I use this material to help to help University Students and soon Secondary Students in helping them walk free from sexual addiction. Most of the insights from this book are unique from Mark Laaser and very helpful for men to get at the core of who they are and to become aware of their emotional wounds. Sexual addiction is sin, but trauma contributes to laying a deeper foundation for the sin of addiction to take route. Again, excellent resource. We are using this in our group for men in Carlisle, England in helping men become free from sexual addiction.

About the Authors

Steven A. Beebe, Ph.D.
Dr. Beebe is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication Studies at Southwest Texas State University. He is also Associate Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication. His undergraduate degree and Master�s degrees are from Central Missouri State University; his doctorate from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

He is the author and co-author of nine books that have been used at hundreds universities worldwide. He is also the author of over one hundred articles, book chapters, and professional papers. Dr. Beebe has twice been a visiting scholar at Oxford University and has also been a visiting scholar at Cambridge University.

For over 25 years he has been an active communication consultant, trainer, and conference speaker listing such clients as IBM, 3M, Motorola, American Express, the U.S. Air Force, the U. S. Department of Education, and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Dr. Timothy P. Mottet
Dr. Mottet is an associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Southwest Texas State University. He teaches graduate seminars in training and development, instructional communication, and communication assessment in addition to directing and teaching the fundamentals of human communication basic course.

Dr. Mottet�s research appears in Communication Education, Communication Quarterly, Communication Research Reports, Journal of Psychology, and Psychological Reports.

Before entering graduate school, Dr. Mottet worked in management for Northwest Airlines where one of his responsibilities was customer service training for flight attendants, ticket/gate agents, and front-line managers. His training experience is in the areas of customer service recovery skills, manager coaching skills and flight attendant certification. As a customer service manager, Dr. Mottet assisted with the merger of Northwest Airlines and Republic Airlines as well as the international alliance with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

Dr. K. David Roach
Dr. Roach is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication Studies at Texas Tech University, in Lubbock, Texas. He teaches courses in business and professional communication, communication in instruction and training, public speaking, nonverbal communication, persuasion, and quantitative research methods.

His area of research is in instructional communication and his research has been published in journals such as Communication Education, Communication Quarterly, Journal of Applied Communication, Communication Research Reports, World Communication Journal, and Southern Communication Journal.

Dr. Roach has conducted training and has given invited presentations on training topics for Texas Instruments, Covenant Hospital, District IV New Mexico Health Care Professionals Organization, West Texas Chapter of the American Society of Training and Development, Texas Tech University Physical Plant Supervisors, Texas Tech University Library, and the Lubbock Independent School District.

Outstanding Training Book

I bought "Training and Development" because it was one of the 20 top training books written, and I'm very happy I bought it. The book was extremely well written and had in it many helpful do's and don'ts, outlines of how to present programs and very interesting material. I read it like a novel and know I shall refer to it many times in the coming months and years.

Comprehensive, Clear, and Effective

This book is an excellent resource for the instructional design process. It provides clear, concise explanations of the theory and practices needed to develop, deliver, and evaluate solid, effective training programs. While the book's focus is on communication an leadership skills, the practices are equally applicable to "hard skills" or technical training. Beebe, Mottet, and Roach explain the material in a manner that is easy to read and understand, so this book works as well for people who have no experience with training as it does for seasoned professionals. I have managed corporate learning and development for a number of years, and this is the central reference I use with my development teams.

Be warned, that the authors come from an instructional communication background and, therefore, do not appear to be slaves to the ADDIE framework like other authors. Everything you find in ADDIE is there, and more, but if you're looking for another book to rehash and regurgitate that stuff, this is not it. While it's not as catchy as ADDIE, their process is much clearer.

If you're teaching or learning to do training, this is an excellent text.
If you're a trainer, instructional designer, learning manager, organizational development or human resources manager, this book belongs on your shelf.

About the Author
Russell Napier is a consultant with CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets writing on issues affecting global equity markets. After studying law, he began his investment career sixteen years ago at Baillie Gifford in Edinburgh managing funds in the Japanese then the US and finally the Asian markets. Moving to Foreign & Colonial Emerging Markets in London he was responsible for managing Asian portfolios. In May 1995, Russell relocated to Hong Kong to become Asian equity strategist for CLSA, a leading Asian equity brokerage. He occupied that position in a full time capacity until 1999 and was ranked number one for Asian strategy in all major industry polls including Institutional Investor from 1997-1999. Since 1999, apart from fulfilling the consultancy role with CLSA, Russell has created and established a new course called A Practical History of Financial Markets (www.sifeco.org), which is taught through the Edinburgh Business School and has been approved by the CFA Institute as part of its Professional Development Program.

Great Study of Long-Term Bear Markets

The main thing I learned from Anatomy of the Bear is that at the bottom of a secular bear market, the news is pretty good. But people are very slow to respond because they've learned to distrust the market. This makes the bottom of a bear a lot different from an interim low, when the news is bad.

Another thing I learned was the meaning of "Dr. Copper." I had wondered what this meant. In the previous 4 conclusions to a long bear market, a rise in copper prices was the first indicator that economic activity was picking up. Further, author Russell Napier presented the order in which different asset classes rose in price, indicating that the bear was over.

I feel strongly that one has to read books such as this one to understand in general how markets behave. The mainstream financial media sends all kinds of signals in comparison. One day headlines say the S&P500 is up on news of a European meeting to discuss a bailout. The next day headlines say the S&P500 is down on news of such a meeting. Napier used research methods to consider the totality of mainstream news stories, not just some in isolation.

Certainly, we have been in a long-term bear market. Everybody wants to know when it ends, but if this bear is similar to the four bears Napier outlined, it probably has some more years to run its course.

Another take on bubbles

Another classic of this type is "Manias Panics and Crashes".

This one is specific to the four big Bear markets of the last century. The author goes through each one as an example. He identifies each stage and has clippings from the markets on peoples sentiment. Shows pricings and looks for what was the best indicator at the bottom. There is no hype, predictions, or false systems in this book. It's more presenting information and presenting patterns that occured.

All the bears follow similar patterns where there is froth, leverage, money sloshing around and everything is priced up a bit. Then some triggering event happens and people either re-evaluate or are forced to change their minds on valuations. Prices drop until they hit a bottom. Things uptrend for a while even though the news is still bad.... The author goes over each bear and how it's the same and how it's different.

Until reading this book, I did not understand or even think about using commodity prices as a leading indicator. Did not know that the stock market turned up before the economy did. Did not know that the great depression involved multiple stages, an international banking crisis, and a late move to gold.

After reading this book, now when I see someone on the TV saying that "They've never seen anything like this before" about LTCM, Bear Strerns, or the price of oil or gold... I have a better perspective. When someone tells me that "the market has definately found bottom" or "Can't go down from here"... I kind of chuckle now.

I do know that when people say "This is a great time to buy stocks..." they often don't know what they're talking about, or they're making it up.

If the credit crisis worsens this year, this summer or the next may be the best buying opportunity in the US stock market in the last 30 years. Hopefully what I've read will be some help. Every downturn is different, and Banks/Fed/Investors act differently each time based on past exp and history... It may be that we've already hit bottom... It may be that nothing in this book will call the next bottom... Only time will tell.

Many won't read this book because it doesn't say "Get RICH QUICK" on the front... LOL

All about the bear markets

This book is rare in that it examines the four greatest bear market bottoms that would have made you the most money if you would have entered them at the right time, instead of the endless books out that show how to buy the hottest stocks in a perpetual bull market. What I like about this book is that the author stays away from his own opinions and simply shows the facts by examining the Wall Street Journal articles during each of these periods, August 1921, July 1932, June 1949, and August 1982. These were the actual bottoms when the market finally began to reverse. You will surprising see that unlike common Wall Street myths the bottom is not when things are the worse and everyone has a negative outlook, actually the WSJ article show that there was hope of a turn around, volume had dried up, P/E ratios were obviously absurdly low, and car sales were beginning to pick up. You will do very well to buy and read this book and add its information to your arsenal of trading and investing. While most of us sit out bear markets to keep our gains it is very important to know when to buy back in for the next up leg, this book can help you do just that.
