Geotechnical Engineering of Dams provides a comprehensive text on the geotechnical and geological aspects of the investigations for and the design and construction of new dams. Detailed descriptions are given from the initial site assessment and site investigation program through to the preliminary and detailed design phases and, ultimately, the construction phase. The assessment of existing dams, including the assessment of the likelihood of internal erosion and piping analysis of risks posed by those dams, is also presented. This valuable source on dam engineering incorporates the collective experience of the authors, each of whom has more than thirty-five years experience in the subject area. Design methods are presented in combination with their theoretical basis, to enable the reader to develop a proper understanding of the possibilities and limitations of a method. For its practical, well-founded approach, this work can serve as a useful guide for professional dam engineers and engineering geologists and as a textbook for university students.

About the Author
Robin Fell is Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of New South Wales and also works as a consultant. He has 38 years of experience in geotechnical engineering of dams, landslides and civil and mining projects in Australia and Asia. He has worked on over 100 dams worldwide and has been involved in all aspects of planning, site investigation, design and construction of embankment dams.
Patrick MacGregor is a Consulting Engineering Geologist with more than 40 years experience in the assessment of geological constraints for major civil engineering projects in a number of countries. He has been involved in dam investigation, design and construction, and particularly worked on hydroelectric developments at all stages from inception to operation.
David Stapledon spent many years on the investigation of large dam construction sites in various countries. He was a Professor of Engineering Geology at the University of South Australia (1964 -1993) and worked as a Consultant in Engineering Geology, contributing to major dam projects in Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia. He has 51 years of experience and was awarded the John Jaeger Memorial Medal for Contributions to Geomechanics in 1995.
Graeme Bell has been a Consulting Dam Engineer since 1962. His role has varied from providing the full technical input, design management and construction advice for new dams to the preparation of complex structural analyses of existing dams. From 1979, he has acted as an independent reviewer on many dam projects, mainly in Australia, but also on several overseas locations.

World's leading reference book on the geotechnical aspects of embankment dams.

This is an excellent book which pulls together a large number of references on geotechnical engineering at a level suitable for dam designers. The geology is skewed to the geology of areas in Australia where dams are constructed but this geology is shared with much of the world. The construction aspects are becoming dated for construction engineers wishing to push the boundaries but remain adequate for designers and small to medium construction projects. The cost of the book is high but so is the potential time saving in having so many references brought together. In some instances (e.g. very high dams) it is probably also necessary to consult the source documents. Some users may also wish to consult a standard reference on risk-based approaches and the ANCOLD Guidelines on Risk Assessment 2003 is a recommended campaign document. I have used this book extensively since the first edition was published and this copy is a replacement for one I gave away. This book sits alongside Embankment Dam Engineering, Casagrande Volume, Hirshfield, R.C. and Poulos S.J. John Wiley and Sons, 1972 on my bookshelf.

COMPREHENSIVE AND MODERN BOOK ON DAM GEOTECHNICS

Most of the classical books on dam engineering have been written in the sixties and seventies.Unfortunately many of the recent books are conference proceedings or just not particularly well written.This book is an exception and has been for us a pleasant surprise since :- it is a comprehensive book on the subject- includes many suggestions and comments coming from the large experience of the authors in the field- it covers the most modern subjects like recent experiences on concrete face rockfill dam design - it is well written and full of references and case historiesI work for a dam engineering firm and more we study this book more we appreciate it.Three years ago I rated it with 4 stars but nowadays I have to change my review to 5 stars.
