The First Book of the Black Goddess, by Matomah Alesha

The First Book of the Black Goddess is a book documenting the extensive history of the African Goddess and the traditions and culture that have emerged from this ancient religion. Everything documented is based on facts gathered from this research. This is the first comprehensive book to amass into one a diverse range of information on the history of the African Goddess. It is also the first book to make an attempt to combine both scientific and mythological conclusions on the subject. This is a reference book for those seeking complete information on black women as ancient deities as well as prehistorical and historical persons of prominence. The table of contents is in evolutionary order, beginning with the darkness of the cosmos and ending with the darkness of the micro world, which includes the emptiness of the mind. Each chapter concerns itself with a certain element and the divine Mother's relationship to it. This book tries to cover a large field and sometimes this is difficult because everything needs to be integrated and presented in a readable whole. The writing style and structure is influenced by ancient texts, thus the original title, The Papyri (Egyptian word for paper) of MA.

The First Book of the Black Goddess is unique in many ways. The most distinguishable marks of this book include a comprehensive look at African women and their many aspects. Secondly, the book combines many fields of science, esoterica, culture and art. Thirdly, this book integrates Feminist, womanist and African-centered scholarship. And lastly, this book is centered in ancient Ethiopia, called Cush in ancient times.

From the Publisher
Matam Press began in Tucson, Arizona on March 1, 1999 as a publishing house whose central concern is alternative views and discourse. This is the first publishing house to include a focus on the Divine Mother and Her global legacy, particularly among peoples of African descent. This is not the whole story on this publishing house but one interesting aspect. It all started when I could not find a certain book with a certain perspective on a certain subject, thus began this enigmatic small press. Matam Press attempts to fill in a gap that is conspicuous among books published, creating books on unique subjects and perspectives that are rare but illuminating. You won't find the monotonous selection of titles here at Matam Press and that is one remarkable thing.

The First Book of the Black Goddess (first edition) by Matomah Alesha is in limited quantities. The second edition will be changed dramatically with many enhancements, new contents and illustrations.

From the Author
The story of the African Goddess is not the story of African women or African people alone. Some believe that the book titles made here at Matam Press is limited to just those of African descent. For all humanity emerges from the great African ancestral mother, she is the source of their mitochrondial DNA. African culture produced the seeds for all cultures on this earth. The genre of the African Goddess is very limited and in some cases non-existent. This is unfortunate given how pivotal the first mother was to the survival of humanity. Like all mothers today, its not something we can take for granted for its the psychic and emotional foundation of community. No one dares to dismiss it or treat it secondary. This book is an attempt to provide at least one document for readers who have an interest in the subject matter. And for those who have never thought of an African Goddess then this book is one good introduction to a cultural perspective that was at one time quite universal before the introduction of drastic environmental and cultural changes. Many people still carry on, sometimes in secret honoring a black goddess of one type or the other. For them, this book will simply confirm what they believe and suspected for years, the important role the black goddess plays in human origins and human cultural existence.

One in every personal library!!
By J. Morris
This is a must read and must own. Finally a book placing the Black Goddess in her proper place in Herstory, at the beginning where she rightfully belongs. This book also documents that ancient Kush was the birth place of civilization and not what we were taught in school. There is a wealth of information at your finger tips. It also invites/encourages you to do some exploring on your own. Thanks Matomah, great job!

Finnally! A Wonder Book Of the Black Goddess for Y2K
By Jeanine Keeys
This is a wonder book! It makes clear much of the Kush traditions. After reading other books of the Goddesses of other traditions which was also satisfying, it is refreshing to read about the African Goddesses of my heritage and origin. I highly recommend this book for those like me that are seekers of learning. I do not recommend it however for those with close minds. I find it amazing that this book has come into my life just in time. I have been searching for just such a book as this. While reading the book it is obvious to me that this book was ten years in the making. It is of very high quality.

There is truth in everything if you you have eyes, see it.
By Cecelia
This book invites you to explore possibilities that HIS-STORY does not and may not ever explore. I suggest reading this book with a mind open. I found the book very interesting in that there is knowledge and even more so connection among all people. Unfortunatly so much has been lost throughout time that we must be open to finding truth. Whether that truth is somthing we want to hear or not, believe or not. Truth is Truth. In Genisis 3 as the Garden of Eden is described, it states "The name of the second river is Gihon:the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia".King James Virsion.
