Approaching Interpretation

I simply had not expected to feel as welcome inside an academic book as I did in this one. It is a wonderful book that manages be at the same time both deeply philosophical and seriously practical without shortchanging either one. Hendrick Wagenaar is an accomplished interpretive researcher and theoretician who wants to explore the role that meanings and intentions play in people's public actions. How does a focus on intensions bring light and insight to policy analysis, and, how does one conduct such analysis with integrity and competence? For instance, a visiting imam's refusal to shake hands with a female government minister might be understood as insulting from the minister's point of view, but completely respectful from the imam's. To understand the stakes in this dispute, it helps a great deal to know something about both the imam's intention not violate tenets he acknowledges in the Koran and the minister's understanding of herself within a long struggle for women's equality in western democracies. In either case, one refers to meanings and intentions and, in this case, to a lack of a shared social-linguistic context.

If you have ever wanted to know more about how one deploys or develops such thinking in policy analysis, this book, especially the final section, will guide and encourage you. However, if you are aware that over the past forty years the philosophy of social and political inquiry has been exploding in developments and would like to make more sense of it all, this book really does an important service. Wagenaar includes chapters that, first, (gently) differentiate interpretive approaches from causality-based approaches and then (even more gently) differentiates several `schools' of interpretation from one another. These latter are divided up into hermeneutic, discursive, and dialogical studies of meaning, with subsets of each. In the third chapter Wagenaar provides insightful examples of each school examining institutional mental health. The subjects might be complex, but Wagenaar's writing is clear. He presents a lot of theory beautifully and understandably; he appreciates what is at stake and what has been achieved. Perhaps we owe this to the influence of Wayne Booth's notion, `fusion of horizons'; the idea that the purpose of interpretation is to help us make sense of one another. At any rate, Wagenaar finds a lot to celebrate in each of the traditions he studies. You might decide after reading this book that you want to start interviewing people and doing interpretive research. If so you would need to supplement this book with some of the material in the bibliography, but you would be well on your road to becoming a well-informed interpretive researcher.

This is a good overview of history for the high school or college student - very detailed with suggested reading at the end of each chapter. It is text-heavy and in black and white with a some color plates in the middle. I like the organization and the focus on concepts and people rather than dates and other minutia.

Excellent work for students and general readers alike

This book traces the history of the western world, from ancient Egypt up to the fall of the Berlin wall.
The book is divided into periods of history, then further subdivided into sections about that period. You can 'dip-in' to a section easily, I find myself picking the book up for a light spot of reading with a cup of tea. I also use this book heavily in my Classics course - so it has a multitude of uses.
Overall, a thorough, unbiased, but easy to read account of western civilization. If you live in the western world, and are wondering where you came from or why things are the way they are, then get this book!

Mysterious figures and events of the Bible.

Authors, Lionel and Patrician Fanthorpe, are researchers who can never be accused of non objectivity. They apply their inexhaustible mental and physical energy into digging and delving and extracting every last atom of evidence pertaining to anything they investigate with a view to writing about it. Their attentions to the Bible have not proved to be exceptions to the rule.
No matter what 'reading' may be applied to the Bible, whether by a believer in its literal sense as the Word of God, or by a curious seeker of the content of ancient writings, the Book contains a liberal serving of mystery and puzzlement.
Most of us once owned a tiny toy boat with a lid on: to and from which we patiently offloaded and onloaded dinky animals; usually in pairs -- or at least they were until some of them inevitably disappeared under the settee. Anyone, believer or unbeliever, who has read the story of Noah's Ark knows of how the hero, Noah, built a vessel upon the command of, and according to the specifications of, God, in order to protect his family and all animal species from the wrath of the Flood. Most of us tend not to consider the fate of the Ark thereafter. Not so the Fanthorpes. They have identified at least two possible locations for its final 'docking', as well as witnesses who have attested to its petrified or frozen remains still existing -- and with dimensions eerily close to those stated in the Biblical account of its construction.
Moses, the leader of the Israelites: was his encounter with the burning bush a confrontation with a manipulative, devious god intent on proving that the Pharaoh could be cruelly outsmarted, or with a beneficent being who conversed with him about the wisdom of avoiding ensuing tragedies?
What were those incredible stones, the Urim and Thummim, entrusted to the mysterious Hermes Trismegistus: he who became identified by the ancient Egyptians as the scribe, Thoth?
Did the progeny of the passionate affair between Solomon and Sheba remove the Ark of the Covenant from his father's keeping? What was the source of its ancient power; and where is it now?
These and many other puzzles posed between the pages of the Bible are examined in depth, with neither complacency nor bias, by the tireless Fanthorpes. Their book is a treasure which makes one very inclined indeed to get that battered old Bible out and read it again in the light of their elucidating deductions. Their excellent work is never easy to put down, but if you can do so just long enough to locate your bible, reading the two, one alongside the other, in cross reference, is recommended.

Extremely Misleading

I found this book mildly entertaining but overall extremely misleading and not at all what I thought it might be. Luckily, I only paid four dollars for it. It's going in the recycling bin.

The description in the back of the book claims that "All these intriguing questions, and many more, are answered in Mysteries of the Bible." But the reality is that this book is short on answers and extremely long on speculation. And when I say speculation, I don't just mean your regular run of the mill academic speculation, limited to rational or biblically supernatural explanations. Oh, no. These authors throw everything from extraterrestrials to radio transmitters and nuclear bombs (yes, could it be that Sodom and Gomorrah were actually destroyed by a nuclear explosion? GASP!) at the mysteries that defy explanation, which is most of them. In fact, I think the only mystery that was biblically explained, and quite satisfactorily, was The Mysterious Power of Prayer.

I was beginning to enjoy some of the book, thinking that though extremely quirky, at the very least I got a few chuckles out of it, and I thought their research might be thorough for what it was, but the warm fuzzy feeling disappeared when, to my horror, in trying to explain what the Urim and Thummim could be they resorted to stating as if it were some sort of plausible lead "Smith also reported that these mysterious engraved gold tablets were in a language which he called 'reformed Egyptian.' All of which, strange as it sounds, may have more than a few strands of amazing truth in it." Unfortunately what the authors failed to clarify is that Joseph Smith Jr. has been thoroughly proven to be a charlatan of the first order, who was unable to decipher any sort of Egyptian writing at all and when given the opportunity proceeded to produce a number of "translations" that were eventually proven to be utter gibberish. Moreover, they fail to mention that the so-called gold plates that Smith claimed to have translated were supposedly given back to the angel who first offered them for Smith to translate and therefore there were never any witnesses to any plates ever having existed at all, and therefore no possible way of ever corroborating whether these non-existent gold tablets could have been the Urim and Thummim anyhow. Why would these authors knowingly follow a lead and not clarify these details but leave this as a valid possibility for consideration? How many other of their possible clues, aside from the ubiquitous and obvious "extraterrestrials" and their "technologies" are completely lacking in credibility in this book? Their bibliography is certainly dismally short, and six of the sources cited are their very own previous publications.

At the very least this thing is published under the wrong rubric, and should have been published as science fiction.

Finally, I am deeply resentful that this thing received public funding from the Canada Council for the Arts. I cannot believe how my government chooses to waste my hard-earned tax dollars.

About the Author
Sharath Komarraju is a Bangalorebased author. He began life as a software engineer but has since jumped the fence to write full time. His first novel, Murder in Amaravati, was longlisted for the Commonwealth Book Prize in 2013. Perhaps his best known work is the Hastinapur series, which attempts to tell the story of the Mahabharata through the thoughts and lives of the epic s lesser known female characters. When he s not writing, he s either watching cricket or talking to his wife, or trying to watch cricket while talking to his wife.

Following the events that occurred by the death of Vichitraveerya in the Book #1 of Hastinapur series, The Winds of Hastinapur by Sharath Komarraju, The Rise of Hastinapur starts with Amba who becomes a priestess, then takes you to Pritha, the princess of Kunti, and at last Gandhari, the princess of Gandhar. Devavrata is now renowned as Bhishma, and Satyavati is not mentioned much in here, but Ganga is still there. And you get to meet Shakuni, the prince of Gandhar and younger brother of Gandhari. Hastinapur has grown to be a juggernaut and so does the number of people scheming for the downfall of Hastinapur and Bhishma.

This book, more than the first one, leaves you wondering if Bhishma was truly a visionary or just a happy-go-lucky chap for the time being. More than men, he has women scheming against him and he has no idea like ever. The celestials are present as usual and they play their role whenever necessary. There are lust-filled, power- hungry people everywhere who may or may not be truly brave. As the story continues, it is easier now to see these characters from Mahabharata to be more realistic than magical as they are told to be. Of course, magic is there due to the Celestials, but this retelling doesn’t have magic for everything; like magic to bring shoot arrows and burn people.

As the story moves forward, there are more and more characters brought in. I am sure there are more to come. Why? Because this is Mahabharata! There are numerous characters meant to be in it. But for now, the royal ladies are paving the path to where they go and lay the foundation to one of the epics that mankind has ever witnessed (ahem, read). So, brace yourselves people. Sharath Komarraju is here to stay narrating his version of Mahabharata.

Great Characterizations!

What a fun read! Yet it was still true enough to great epic to add a wonderful historical backdrop to these women's tales. I especially liked the characterization of Gandhari. In contrast to the usual more passive personality, this was a very interesting, more fleshed out Gandhari. I hope Komarraju continues this series. I'd love to read his take on Draupadi and Subhara. This book moves along very quickly and kept me intrigued!

Nifty creative journal

Bought this for the Mr. to help him get back in touch with his creativity. After a few days he declared that he didn't like it, citing that it had childish prompts and felt silly. So, I took over the book and gotta say that I love it. Yes, some of the prompts are childish in nature, like stapling pages together and drawing with foreign materials, however that's sort of the point.

As children we are able to draw, paint, and create without censoring or second guessing. In our minds everything we make is wonderful, beautiful, and cool. It is only through the critique of others that we begin to criticize ourselves. Using this book we adults are able to got back to that childlike freedom and curiosity, and allow ourselves to create without restriction.

This book both gives me anxiety and relives it in a childlike way. I'm an avid reader and my books are my prizes possessions. So when the first page told me to crack the spine, I nearly cried as I bent the book in half backward. But when I heard that spine crack it was like my shell cracked and I was free from the chains of all of my books. Somewhere in the book you will find a page that tells you to attach a string to the spine of the book and swing wildly. I recommend clearing the room of all living creatures and breakables. I think my little sister might still have a bump. But otherwise, this book was a fantastic experience and I recomend it for all ages. I am 24 and this is a fantastic stress reliever.

What an awesome journal/book. I bought this for my ten year old daughter who HAD to have it. I wish I would have had one of these when I was that age. She loves her journals and loves drawing; this is the best of both worlds. Super super cute! The quality of the actual paper backing cover is very nice and durable, almost like vinyl - maybe it is, I don't know - but it's coated. Every girl should have one of these - I think it would really help with sorting out and managing their feelings. I love how it's not just blank pages, but gives you ideas to write about and let out your feelings. There's a cute first page where you write your name, address and phone number. The next page is almost an instructional page. The third is a humorous list of materials you'll need for this journal. There are many pages - but I can see her filling it up fairly fast. I hope there's a sequel to this journal :) I highly recommend this to anyone with a daughter, niece, granddaughter, etc. or for anyone that has NO idea what to buy a little girl for their birthday or Christmas - THIS IS THE GIFT I PROMISE!

Time I will never get back...

Do yourself a favor and not purchase or download this book. Not even if its free. It's that bad.

I will admit that I am a grown up that has started reading young adult fiction because right now all novels for women over 30 are going through a 50 Shades of Porn for the Modern Housewife phase. Great for some, just not my cup of tea.

So, I gave this book a try and I'm sorry to report that it is really bad. First off, it's quite clear that the author (1) Does not have any children of her own and (2) Has not gotten over high-school.

Why? Well - for one, real parents don't let their teenage daughters have the 18 year old neighbor boy have weekly sleep overs - not in the same house, let alone the same bed. Real parents don't let their 17 year old daughter go out on dates during the week with 21 year old losers that still hang around high-school football games. They don't run out in their bathrobe to check out the piece of ass and squeal about his hotness after. Real parents worry about how they've shaped their children so far, what sort of future they will have, if they're doing their homework, making sure they're not doing drugs and praying to god they aren't ready to have sex no matter how often they kiss their pillow.

Second,high-school isn't full of sexual aware teenagers, where the room actually goes quiet whenever the heroine enters a room and cat calls follow her every move. High school is full of freaked out kids, coping with adult feelings and adolescent maturity.

I'm sorry if the author reads this and is hurt. But the true feelings of falling for your friend when you don't understand yourself or the feelings you're having could have been explored on such a more complex level. Young Adult can be mature, even when the characters are not.

She was a tease who should have known better...MAJOR SPOILERS!

Like the earlier poster, I too was hooked on the sample chapters so I went ahead & purchased the book with excitement. Ugh, major disappointment!

***SPOILERS*** I hate to say this about anyone but I'm sorry, I just found the heroine to be a dumb, irresponsible ho! I mean, she's sixteen & flirting (sexual innuendos!) with a 20-21 year old guy who does not attend her school but hangs out there! She gets into this adult's car to go for milkshakes without telling anyone, after only meeting him the day before for a few hours, & after her best guy friend (hero) whom she's grown up with & always looked out for her says the douche is bad news & stay away! Where is her sense of safety & responsibility? She knows she's underage yet dresses in a mini-skirt & a top with her freakin' red bra showing...and her parents let her out of the house like that to go out on a date with this adult?! Granted this was a few weeks later once she turned 17, but good grief, I found her parents to be caring folks so for them to allow this just because the guy is gorgeous? Freakin' unbelievable!

Like the heroine, I've had my best guy friend carry me around & I've jumped on them...piggyback! Who the heck runs to their best friend & jumps on them in the front, wrapping their arms & legs around said guy like glue, basically grinding against each other & giving each other hickies? Then, though she doesn't want psycho adult, instead of blowing him off, she still talks to him flirty & with sexual undertones, WTF?! I pity the hero.

Horrible, terrible heroine. Her behaviour was so appalling that I skip through several pages, though I persevered till the end hoping there was a light at the end of the tunnel & that our wonderful heroine would eventually mature.

I hope young teens who read this realize and understand that this is fiction and do not think they have to act like her to get a good guy. What a waste of my time & money.

I cannot believe 20 + people gave this book five stars. I feel duped. I normally do not write reviews but I have to because this was just awful. It was too cheesy. I don't know how many times the hero said "I love you Riley Bear." Unreal! I like a good love story but this was just too much. Not sure how many parents would allow their teenage daughters to have boys sleep over, and how many parents would allow a group of 16-17 year olds to just drive to Vegas on their own.

I feel like the author just tried too hard, too much unrealistic drama.
