Behind this remodelling of an industry is Government. The interest by Government is not new, and report after report in the post war period has exhorted the industry to perform better.

About the Author

Mike Murray is a lecturer in construction management within the Department of Architecture & Building Science at the University of Strathclyde. He is currently at the closing stage of his PhD research and holds a first class honours degree and MSc in construction management. He has lectured at three Scottish universities and has presented research papers at both UK and overseas conferences. Mike has recently presented one-day workshops to UK contractors, Costain, Wates and Gleeson.

Professor Dave Langford is the Director of the Graduate School in the Department of Architecture & Building Science at Shrathclyde University in Glasgow. He has contributed to the field of construction management for over 25 years and has lectured and consulted throughout the world. He has written many academic papers and several books including two which he co-authored for Blackwell, Strategic Management in Construction and Construction Management in Practice.

Just what I needed

Prof. Langford's book provided exactly what I needed -- a review of all the British Government reports on the state of the UK construction industry since WW2. It would have been nearly impossible to obtain copies of all those reports from this side of the pond, not to mention how long it would have taken to extract the gist of each.

Robert Atwan is director of The Blue Hills Writing Institute at Curry College and the series editor of the annual Best American Essays, which he founded in 1985. His essays, reviews, and critical articles have appeared in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic Monthly, Iowa Review, Denver Quarterly, Kenyon Review, River Teeth, and many other publications. I ordered this book for my English 103 class. Even though it was a required text, the topics covered in here are very enjoyable to read about and discuss. Everything from religion, rage, sports, and gun control is addressed from many different view point. I would definitely recommend getting this book if you have an interest in current topics of society.

reS-Gr 1-The origins of Thanksgiving are explained by a group of mice as they put on a play for their animal friends. Cushman's cheerful spreads show the little creatures using handmade props and putting their all into this neighborhood production. The characters are charming and the colors are vibrant. Where pictures appear in a smaller frame, objects often extend into the borders for visual appeal. The problem comes with the text. Short rhyming stanzas at first seem to offer a pleasing read-aloud pattern, only to dissolve into an odd scheme, and readers may constantly try to recover a poetic balance that isn't there. Another problem comes with fictionalizing the Pilgrims as mice and keeping true to the Thanksgiving account. These diminutive Pilgrims wear clothes, sail on the Mayflower, suffer a hard winter, and plant corn, but that continuity breaks when "They built new homes in tree trunks-" instead of houses. There is a scarcity of Thanksgiving books for this age group that can adequately explain the historical significance of the holiday in very simple terms. Halloween Mice! (Clarion, 1995) by the same duo hit upon a combination of text and pictures that works very well, but it isn't trying to tie in a historical concept. If you aren't overly concerned with an odd poetic structure or a break in the logic of mice as Pilgrims, then this book should fill a gap in read-aloud Thanksgiving material for the younger set.

Ages 3-6. From the writer and illustrator of Christmas Mice! (2000), Halloween Mice! (1995), and Valentine Mice! (1998), here's a Thanksgiving picture book for young children. Thanksgiving is the story within a story here, as interpreted by a group of little costumed mice who are putting on a pageant. The rhymed verse sets an upbeat tone for the action. There's plenty of comic byplay in the watercolor illustrations, which show the furry thespians acting out a very simplified story of the Mayflower voyage, the hardships the Pilgrims endured on land, and the triumph represented by Thanksgiving. The happy--though occasionally hapless--members of the little troupe slosh paint on the stage and knock each other over with bits of scenery, as well as acting out the tale with enthusiasm. Preschool and early elementary grade teachers looking for a short, light introduction to the holiday may want to give this colorful picture book a try. Carolyn Phelan

Disappointing...

Not as cute or informative as I had hoped. I was looking for an age appropriate Thanksgiving story for my 3-year old, but this is defintely more for toddlers than preschoolers. Not quite exciting enough to hold his interest.

Decent holiday fare

This is a pleasant but fairly mediocre Thanksgiving book for young kids. Its premise is that mice are putting on a play about the first thanksgiving. We watch the show and then cheer at the end. The artwork has a few clever moments in it depicting stage hand mice pushing Plymouth rock props into the scene, etc. The text, however, doesn't flow very well. It is told in terse couplets, as if in verse, yet often the verses fail to rhyme - or if they do, we wait a few pages for the rhyme to come. Thus, any readaloud singsong quality which the text is apparently meant to have (and which is the only thing that might compensate for its abruptness) is foiled. The idea of the play is engaging enough to make this an interesting addition to the sometimes thin genre of Thanksgiving picture books.

The mouse characters are as endearing as always, and the illustrations lend humor to the story, as the mouse characters struggle with props and preparations. Young fans of the holiday mice will love this delightful book celebrating Thanksgiving!

the book reads easily, explains concepts well

I bought this book not for a course or exam, but to answer some specific questions. As a clinical physician I thought it would be a reference text only. Now I find I can't put it down and have started to read it all the way through. Although dense with information in nearly every sentence, the book reads easily, explains concepts well, and is worth every penny twice over. I highly recommend this to anyone in medicine or pharmacology. I only wish it was available when I was a student.

Not much of an explanation

I didn't find this very helpful. I wanted to see if I could better understand just how a solar system works, and this book did nothing to help me. It is a very basic explanation of why solar energy has such potential but I already know that. Maybe the author is just so beyond me that he was unable to get down to my level of understanding. Also, while I don't doubt his intelligence, he should have a native English speaking proofreader go over his work.

Lots of general blabla that a simple internet search does reveal as well. I got it for 0 dollars on sale, but it was still non memorable and little informative. If it would have cost money, I would have been upset.

I had hoped for an explanation of how exactly solar power works (schematics, electrical flow, component analysis, set up ect) - not much demystifying going on here

Outstanding text for newcomers and veterans

One of the hardest things about taking up a new hobby (or profession) is knowing where to begin your study. With so many books and manuals on the market, the sheer volume of available information can seem overwhelming. Well, neophyte photographers, take heart, because here is the book that you need. If I could recommend only one source for someone really looking to "get serious" about taking quality photographs, this would be it.

The book progresses in a very logical manner, beginning with a basic introduction to the very nature of light and optics and proceeding through camera mechanics, principles of lighting and composition, film characteristics, and digital techniques. As you would expect in any photography text, there are many, many photographic illustrations. One thing that really shines about Langford is the wonderful diagrams, which are among the best I have seen in any textbook. Understanding optics and the behavior of light is not always intuitive, but the diagrams do an excellent job of illustrating difficult concepts in an easy-to-grasp manner.

The writing itself, while clear and unambiguous, sometimes tends a little dry. You may find books like "Understanding Exposure" or any of Scott Shelby's popular series to be more engaging; these are excellent books, however Langford has a much wider scope and so of necessity the prose is somewhat more technical. In my opinion, though, this also makes it a more satisfying reading experience. Shelby's series tell you how to do something, but Langford tells you why it works.

A word about digital and film. It is true that this book is somewhat heavily weighted toward the "old-fashioned" subject of film photography. Indeed, multiple chapters are spent discussing the characteristics and chemistry of film as well as its processing and darkroom techniques. (I suppose many would even consider the discussion of handheld light meters to be antiquated.) As someone who shoots primarily with film, I have no problem with this and in fact welcome it. This isn't the forum for rehashing the "film vs. digital" debate, but I would encourage anyone reading this -- especially those who are new to the field -- to keep an open mind. Film is anything but obsolete, and an understanding of it can only strengthen your photographic skills. The information is there if you want it, but for those who choose to skip it, there is also a strong introduction to digital techniques.

In summation, I think this is a book that should sit on any photographer's shelf. I have been shooting for years, but I still consult this text from time to time to refresh myself on this point or that. I strongly recommend it to anyone looking to get the most out of their camera.

VERY GOOD INFORMATION!!!

This book is a great book for a person learning serious photography. It also covers some intermediate topics. There is also mention of Medium format SLRs (Hassleblad and Mamiya) and TLRs. This book gives equal coverage to both film and digital.

Good book, Still very Old

This book used to be good. It explains basic principles of photography very well.

Although in its ninth edition, and published in 2010, the book is still very old. It is film-oriented and need a complete overhaul. A lot of techniques are already out-dated. About half of the book can be completely ignored. It talks too much about film, film processing, large format camera, hand-held meter etc.

The books need a complete re-written. Simply adding some contents of digital cameras does not make it modern.
