Latin American Philosophy: Currents, Issues, DebatesFrom Indiana University Press

"The essays in this book make it elegantly clear that there is a vigorous and rigorous Latin American philosophy... and that others dismiss it at their peril." ―Mario Senz

The ten essays in this lively anthology move beyond a purely historical consideration of Latin American philosophy to cover recent developments in political and social philosophy as well as innovations in the reception of key philosophical figures from the European Continental tradition. Topics such as indigenous philosophy, multiculturalism, the philosophy of race, democracy, postmodernity, the role of women, and the position of Latin America and Latin Americans in a global age are explored by notable philosophers from the region. An introduction by Eduardo Mendieta examines recent trends and points to the social, political, economic, and cultural conditions that have inspired the discipline. Latin American Philosophy brings English-speaking readers up to date with recent scholarship and points to promising new directions.

Auto Focus: The Self-Portrait in Contemporary Photography, by Susan Bright

Auto Focus features a dazzling array of self-portraits by seventy-five of the world’s foremost contemporary photographers. Photography writer and curator Susan Bright provides a clear guide through this significant and dynamic genre, showing how issues of identity—whether national, sexual, racial, personal, or artistic—are key to understanding the work of many of today’s leading photographers.

This lavishly illustrated, accessible survey is organized into five thematic chapters: diaristic and autobiographical images; pictures of the body; the use of masks and masquerade; the return to studio portraiture and the photographic album; and performance, both public and private. An informative illustrated introduction explains the history of the photographic self-portrait from the 1840s to the late twentieth century, providing an invaluable context for the recent surge in artists’ images of themselves.

From intimate images of introspection and those that consciously challenge notions of ethnicity and sexuality to dramatic, stylized photographs of dreamlike scenarios, Auto Focus shows how one of the longest-established artistic genres continues to fascinate artists today.

Looking at One's Self
By Conrad J. Obregon
The photographic self-portrait is vastly different from the photographic portrait. The union of photographer and subject leads to an effort by the photographer to create an image that is more revealing of the inner aspects of the subject or offers greater examination of the milieu in which the photographer exists, or so I would conclude from "Auto Focus: the Self-portrait in Contemporary Photography".

Susan Bright, who leads us through this collection of post-modern images, has provided a useful text to aid in comprehending this collection of images from at least 75 photographers. Most of them were unknown to me, except for a few like Martin Parr. Bright has divided the book into five genres that seem to greatly overlap. Autobiography deals with the every day life of the artist. Body focuses on the use of the artist's body to convey a message. Masquerade presents the artist as someone else. The section on studio and album organizes around an approach to the self-portrait that is closely allied to traditional methods of organization. The chapter on performance includes photographs that seem to document performance art, although a few represent acts that were never publicly performed.

After Bright's introductory historical overview of the field of self-portraits, she provides some introductory comments to each genre and then as part of a two to four page layout, featuring the photographs of the artists, provides comments on the individual's work. If you are of the school that believes that the art photograph should speak for itself, without explanation, you may be thankful to have Bright along as a guide. For me at least, trying to understand what each of the photographs was about was a difficult task, even when I knew that each picture was concerned with questions like "what is the self."

There appeared to be few links between the connotations that the artist must have seen in their images and those that I brought to the project. Occasionally the images were so confrontational that it was easy to understand that I was being attacked, as in the photographs of the self-maimed body of Catherine Opie. Occasionally I smiled, as when I looked at the images of Joan Fontcuberta, dressed as an eastern rites priest, engaged in activities that were impossible, like surf-boarding on the back of a dolphin. Occasionally I appreciated the fine craftsmanship of an artist like Gaeca who draws his style both from masters like Vermeer and from modern advertising. Mostly I felt in the dark when I looked at pictures like those of Nick Cave who hides his body completely behind an arrangement of flowers or handbags or blankets.

I realized that part of my confusion may have been because the understanding of some of these artists requires an accretion of many photographs rather then just the three of four presented here. Certainly I did not appreciate the first time I saw an image of and by Cindy Sherman as much as I did when I had seen many of her self-portraits. (Sherman is not one of the artists presented except in an historic context. There are images by Aneta Grzeszykowska imitating Sherman's imitations of motion picture publicity shots.)

I am not a post-modernist. The photograph that I found most moving and intriguing in the book was a self-portrait of Robert Mapplethorpe in the historic overview introduction, made in the year before he died. On the other hand I also believe that the way to grow in one's appreciation of the new is to seriously examine what, for the viewer, is a cutting edge of art. These images provided me with an opportunity for such an examination.

Hmmmm...Nice messages...
By Michelle Alberigi McKenzie
Boy, I was so excited about getting this deck. They just arrived last night and I ripped into the box. Sigh. I love the messages on the cards, but (as a card reader for over 30 years) I expected images that would help me 'read' these. Not the case here. These are attractive, in an 'electric' sorta way, but there's no way to know the meaning beyond the brief word or phrase on the card. I'm attaching a photo here.

Now, that's not saying I won't keep working with them. I'm going to give these the benefit of the doubt because I really love Pam's books, and I just might be missing the point here. I'll be back if I can add a star.

Disappointing effort
By Amazon Customer
It is hard to write a review of a deck of oracle cards without comparing it to other decks of cards. I have about 10 sets. Part of doing the reading/interpretation is looking at the picture and getting more information from what the pictures are telling you. The art on these cards is similar to the designs of the book covers. In other words, there is no more information to be gleaned from the card itself other than what the words say. The words are not particularly enlightening, and require reference to the book to gather what they are saying. The descriptions in the book are as sparse as any I have ever seen. And while it is in keeping with the theme of the E books, it seems like it was hurriedly thrown together. Disappointing, particularly in light of having been co-authored with Colette Baron-Reid, whose decks are typically well-crafted.

Good for if you want to do readings that are of simplicity, is quick to do BUT is accurate
By andrea brown
I just received this deck today and i must say that the readings were accurate and the messages were the same as my other oracle card decks (Colette Baron-Reid) "Wisdom of the Hidden Realms (which i like much better than this deck). However, if you are looking for something that offers very in-depth, spiritual insight that consists of more thorough information then this oracle card deck is not for you. The Oracle of E offers a more simplistic approach to the answers to the questions you ask and it leaves you having to do MORE thorough thinking with a bit of self-reflection...BUT isnt that one of the purposes of this oracle card deck? It provides brief and simple phrases and meaning as a way to have you figure out what you should do next. On the contrary with Collette's Wisdom of the Hidden Realms the messages can either be seen as an ally or challenger which in itself provides the reader with insight and knowledge as to the struggles or strengths of what they are seeking. The Oracle of E is good for a pick-me upper and inspirational messages that at the end leaves it up to you to decide where to take it from there. I will say that every reading i have done is VERY accurate AND just a quick word of advice...while you are shuffling the cards if a card or two or three pops up place it aside and let it be part of the cards that you pull from the deck. You WILL see how each card relates to the question that you were asking. This method has also worked with my Angel Cards by Doreen Virtue. Pop up cards from ANY oracle card deck are strong messages from your guides, angels, etc. This has even happened when i use Colette's wisdom of the hidden realm deck.

Cholinergic Urticaria: A Guide to Chronic Heat Hives, by B Page

At age 18, Ben’s life took a dramatic turn when he developed cholinergic urticaria--a hives disorder that reacts to heat.

Over the next decade, he struggled to find ways to manage the condition, often trying various remedies in the process.

Eventually, his hives became so severe that he couldn’t even do basic day-to-day tasks. Any activity he engaged in would often result in an unbearable stinging and itching sensation that engulfed his body.

About Cholinergic Urticaria:

Cholinergic urticaria is a type of hives characterized by a hypersensitive response in the skin due to an increase in body temperature, especially if the increase is enough to illicit a sweat response. It’s often referred to as “chronic heat hives,” and it can cause tremendous discomfort for those suffering with it.

Symptoms of this type of physical hives can include a stinging, itching, and “prickling” sensation when the individual becomes warm. Hives and wheals may also develop. Some people have only itching and prickling symptoms, whereas others may have only actual hives (or anything in-between).

This type of hives can be triggered by physical activity (exercise, strong emotions, laughing, etc.), or passive heating (taking a hot shower, walking into a hot room, standing in the hot sun, etc.).

About the Author

Ben is the founder of CholinergicUrticaria.net, a website dedicated to helping others with cholinergic urticaria.

He often struggled with depression and withdrew from most activities. However, by the grace of God, he eventually overcame his hives disorder.

Ben wrote this book to educate people about the disorder, to encourage and motivate current sufferers, and to share what’s helped him overcome his own hives.

Good help
By Nikolaos Karafotias
Helpful book. I admit that I haven't yet started the therapy that the author wrote inside but I will try whatever I can. I have also read in one blog here in Greece that the nutrition has an impact to this awful allergy and I will start experiments. I have it for 15 years and somehow I have tired of it. I would like to improve my life and not live like this all the time. God bless the author.

The System of the World, by Isaac Newton

The Egyptians were early observers of the heavens; and from them, probably, this philosophy was spread abroad among other nations; for from them it was, and the nations about them, that the Greeks, a people of themselves more addicted to the study of philology than of nature, derived their first, as well as soundest, notions of philosophy ; and in the vestal ceremonies we may yet trace the ancient spirit of the Egyptians; for it was their way to deliver their mysteries, that is, their philosophy of things above the vulgar way of thinking, under the veil of religious rites and hieroglyphic symbols.

It was the ancient opinion of not a few, in the earliest ages of philosophy, that the fixed stars stood immoveable in the highest parts of the world; that, under the fixed stars the planets were carried about the sun; that the earth, us one of the planets, described an annual course about the sun, while by a diurnal motion it was in the mean time revolved about its own axis; and that the sun, as the common fire which served to warm the whole, was fixed in the centre of the universe.

This was the philosophy taught of old by Philolaus, Aristarchus of Samos, Plato in his riper years, and the whole sect of the Pythagoreans; and this was the judgment of Anaximander, more ancient than any of them; and of that wise king of the Romans, Numa Pompilius, who, as a symbol of the figure of the world with the sun in the centre, erected a temple in honour of Vesta, of a round form, and ordained perpetual fire to be kept in the middle of it.

Heisenberg's Quantum Mechanics, by Mohsen Razavy

This book provides a detailed account of quantum theory with a much greater emphasis on the Heisenberg equations of motion and the matrix method. No other texts have come close to discuss quantum theory in terms of depth of coverage. The book features a deeper treatment of the fundamental concepts such as the rules of constructing quantum mechanical operators and the classical-quantal correspondence; the exact and approximate methods based on the Heisenberg equations; the determinantal approach to the scattering theory and the LSZ reduction formalism where the latter method is used to obtain the transition matrix. The uncertainty relations for a number of different observables are derived and discussed. A comprehensive chapter on the quantization of systems with nonlocalized interaction is included. Exact solvable models, and approximate techniques for solution of realistic many-body problems are also considered. The book takes a unified look in the final chapter, examining the question of measurement in quantum theory, with an introduction to the Bell's inequalities.

Review
One of the most interesting aspects of the book is the way in which the subjects are presented having in mind a couple of prevailing guiding questions: why and where is this formulation of quantum mechanics more useful than others? And how can the formalism be applied in specific circumstances? I particularly enjoyed the chapters on scattering and diffraction, where concepts from the wave picture are used but then applied in a determinantal framework. In general, Heisenberg's Quantum Mechanics is a great complement to other books in the sense that it expands on areas that are usually discussed using different tools. -- Contemporary Physics "Contemporary Physics"

Heisenberg Deserved Better
By Dann Passoja
This work attempts to offer an insight into an important issue of QM, but it delivers, instead, a complex and often incoherent exposition of its main purpose. Hoping to maintain completeness, a needed clarity is all but lost. The issue at stake is very important but isn't delivered with an attempt to maintain an understanding of the main idea. It's rigor that's been traded for simple understanding.

It has a different way of bringing about quantum mechanics. I really recommend if you want to start studying a "new" language of quantum mechanics. Not for beginners.

Buying a Better World: George Soros and Billionaire Philanthropy, by Anna Porter

The incredible, inside story of the man and the organization changing the way we change the world.

George Soros is well known as the legendary speculator who made a fortune betting against the British pound in 1992, but he is also a philanthropist who has spent billions in order to promote democracy around the world. Morton Abramowitz of the Carnegie Endowment for Peace once said that Soros was “the only private citizen with his own foreign policy.”

Anna Porter has interviewed Soros, his senior staff, journalists, politicians, and many others in an attempt to understand the man. Each person has a unique story to tell. Focusing on the last decade, she explores how Soros’s Open Society Foundations have spread his ideas of human rights, democracy, Western liberalism, and participatory capitalism around the globe. These are the ideas Soros has said he considers worth dying for. How have they translated into reality? What will his legacy be?

In her latest book, Buying a Better World, she spins a mesmerizing narrative of one of the most intriguing human beings of his time, billionaire philanthropist George Soros." (Michael Harris, award-winning author of Party of One)

"Anna Porter's Kasztner's Traintakes us to the magnificently researched and reconstructed world of Hungary during the twin fascist terrors of the Arrow Cross and the SS - to a world in which everything is in flux except the determination of Kasztner. Egypt on the Brink: From Nasser to Mubarak, by Tarek Osman

Famous until the 1950s for its religious pluralism and extraordinary cultural heritage, Egypt is now seen as an increasingly repressive and divided land, home of the Muslim Brotherhood and an opaque regime headed by the aging President Mubarak.

In this immensely readable and thoroughly researched book, Tarek Osman explores what has happened to the biggest Arab nation since President Nasser took control of the country in 1954. He examines Egypt’s central role in the development of the two crucial movements of the period, Arab nationalism and radical Islam; the increasingly contentious relationship between Muslims and Christians; and perhaps most important of all, the rift between the cosmopolitan elite and the mass of the undereducated and underemployed population, more than half of whom are aged under thirty. This is an essential guide to one of the Middle East’s most important but least understood states.

Review
"Short, readable, clear, and passionately written. A good introduction to Egypt's story.”—Boston Globe (Boston Globe)

"Osman delivers textured historical context . . . and he focuses analysis more accurately than most current pundits."—Carlin Romano, The Chronicle of Higher Education (Carlin Romano The Chronicle of Higher Education)

“Published a short time before thousands of Egyptians began pouring into Cairo's Tahrir Square, Egypt on the Brink is a timely account of Egypt near the end of the 30-year Mubarak era. It is presented thematically, rather than chronologically, and one of the most intriguing themes is the notion that whereas Egypt in the age of liberal nationalism (the 1920s and 1930s) and the Nasser years (1952-70) had a regional standing and a sense of national purpose, Hosni Mubarak's regime lost both this standing and this purpose as it devolved into a dreary despotism. Yet Osman writes with neither nostalgia nor disdain. Separate chapters discuss the Islamists, the Christians, the rise of liberal capitalism, and Egypt's youth. Even the conclusion, which speculates on who and what regime would replace Mubarak, now overtaken by events, offers useful thoughts on Egypt's distinctive politics.”—L. Carl Brown, Foreign Affairs (L. Carl Brown Foreign Affairs)

“Strange, then, that despite continued fascination with ancient Egypt, so little aside from turgid academic tomes or breathless journalistic accounts has been published about the current condition of the most populous country in the turbulent Middle East, and among the most influential. “Egypt on the Brink” is a slim book, simply written and easy to understand, and it goes a long way to filling this void. […] The author, Tarek Osman, a Western-educated Egyptian banker and occasional columnist, brings the eye of an intelligent amateur to the story of his country’s past half-century. He writes with feeling, backed up by an impressively broad list of sources as well as sharp critical insight and astute judgment.”—The Economist (Economist)

“It is hard to imagine a timelier book than Egypt on the Brink. . . an elegantly written and insightful analysis of the fissures and discontents of contemporary Egypt.”—James Jankowski, Middle East Journal (James Jankowski Middle East Journal)

About the Author
Born and raised in Egypt, Tarek Osman was educated at the American University in Cairo and Bocconi University in Italy. His writings appear in a number of publications in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the Middle East.

Strong explanatory power
By Theodore M. Horesh
This is a clear and concise account of recent Egyptian history. It is comprehensive, covering recent social, political, religious, and economic transformations. And published by Yale University Press, it is easily an academic level text, in spite of the author's apparent lack of academic or publishing background. More importantly, the book is well written and has deep explanatory power. In short, it is the sort of book in which I find myself underlining every line.

Having read other accounts of recent Egyptian history, I have often come away feeling that I still didn't understand Egyptian passions. Osman probes deeply into the successes and failures of the early twentieth century constitutional monarchy and parliament, the opening and westernization of the culture during that time, and why that opening failed to take root. He thoroughly explains not just the events of Nasser's revolution and rule from 1952-1970 but also his successes and failures, why Nasser did so much to galvanize national pride, and why he ultimately failed. He does the same for Sadat and the Islamists and Mubarak, bringing to the subjects far greater nuance than I have yet to find elsewhere.

This is an objective reading of Egyptian history. But Osman's reading of say the rule of Nasser or the rule of Sadat is sympathetic enough to give the impression he is on their side. He does this continually, bringing sympathy and intelligence to his subjects. This lends to the book far more cultural explanatory power than is to be found in most histories. You will come away not just feeling like you understand what is happening in Egypt and why it is happening but how different classes probably feel about what is happening. This can ennoble Egyptians without sweeping anything under the rug. Ultimately, this is what good history and cultural writings should always do.

This book deserves to be a widely read best seller. And with the literature on Egypt being so slim, one can only hope that Osman will write more on the subject and find a way to get it translated. Egypt will need many voices like his own to bring clarity to Egyptian affairs in the coming years of change. And as the American alliance with Egypt is such an important one, now that Egypt is awakening, America will need such voices as well.

Prescient; 4.5 Stars

This very well written, concise, and insightful book is a short survey of recent Egyptian history aimed at providing the background for understanding the present difficult situation of Egypt. Written prior to the recent overthrow of the Mubarak government, it is notable for laying out many of the tensions of Egyptian society that led to the apparently successful revolution.

This book is organized chronologically. The first chapter briefly covers the 19th century reformist efforts of the Mohammed Ali dynasty and the modernizing, liberal constitutional monarchy that was its successor (under British colonial control). Osman presents this as something of a Golden Age of Egyptian elite society with a relatively dynamic economy, cosmopolitan culture, religious toleration, considerable innovation in Islamic theology and social thought, a high rate of artistic achievement, the development of important and relatively democratic political institutions, and a sense of "Egyptianism." Osman is careful to point out the defects of this period, notably the monopolization of wealth by a relatively small oligarchy and some notable political failures. The following and particularly good chapter is very nice overview of Nasser's dominance of Egypt, stressing the revolutionary nature of his regime, both in terms of developing a state dominated economy that did initially produce substantial growth and opened up opportunities for many Egyptians, and the "Arabization" of Egyptian politics in which Egypt was the center of the Arab world and Egyptians had a broader consciousness of themselves. The failure of Nasser's "project" with the enormous defeat in the Six Day/June war, economic stagnation, and political repression is described objectively and critically. The succeeding chapters are nice descriptions of Sadat's and Mubarak's regimes, with their efforts to retain control by increasing repression, the relative radicalization of Egyptian politics in an Islamic direction, the shift from being the center of the Arab world to a junior partner of the USA, and efforts to promote economic growth as a panacea via neo-liberal policies. Osman has 2 chapters on the predicament of Egyptian Christians and the problems faced by the enormous mass of young Egyptians.

Osman ultimately described a profoundly blocked society with a huge mass of young Egyptians lacking opportunity, failing governmental institutions, an eroding middle class, neo-liberal reforms with some positive effects but whose major effect has been the prosperity of a relatively small and well-connected elite, and a government resorting to repression to maintain its grip. This book gives the sense, now vindicated by recent events, that even a modest amount of additional stress would precipitate a revolution. From Osman's discussions, any successful successor governments will have to provide both economic and political opportunities for a large mass of Egyptians not served by the present system. He is quite clear that while there is an inchoate and widely distributed Islamism in Egypt, this is not the political Islam of conservative American caricature. Osman also suggests that any successful new regime will have to promote some broad ideal to legitimate itself and promote social cohesion, though what he thinks this can be is not clear.

Perhaps because of the brevity of the book, there are some significant omissions. The discussion of the elitist character of the "liberal" regime of the first half of the 20th century barely mentions the British colonial regime, which must have significantly retarded social and political change. Osman makes much of the demography of Egypt, its recent large population growth, and the huge mass of young Egyptians, but there is not discussion of why this occurred. Some North African nations, such as Tunisia and even Algeria, appear to have had significantly faster drops in birth rates. My impression is that the Egyptian military, assisted by generous American subsidies, plays a larger role in the Egyptian economy that Osman's comments imply.

A final, excellent feature is the excellent footnotes and bibliography.

Egypt on the Brink
By Paul J. Markowitz
The recent "peaceful revolution" in Egypt has successfully started a transition of power in this most important and strategic Middle Eastern country. Perhaps even more significantly it has begun a seismic shift throughout the Middle East and beyond, whose ultimate impact has yet to be fully determined. Therefore it is a most propitious and timely moment for a book to be published that traces the political, social and religious history of Egypt from Nasser to Mubarek.

Osman's thesis is that at the end of the first half of the 20th Century, Egypt was an agrarian nation where people were attached to the land. Now it is the largest exporter of cheap labor in the Middle East and is suffering a major "brain drain". In this process Egypt has transformed from a beacon of tranquility (where there has been no civil war for 7000 years), to a breeding ground for aggression.

Although Osman focuses on the period from 1950 to present, he puts into historical perspective much of the earlier history of Egypt. Egypt had a long history of being foreign-ruled by stronger societies that coveted Egypt's geopolitical position of being at the crossroads of the world. Even Mohamed Ali (1805-1849), credited with being "the founder of modern Egypt", was of Albanian origin and came to Egypt as a soldier of the Ottoman Empire. It was Ali who initially Europeanized the country, educated the best and brightest Egyptians in Europe, and created an independent modern army.

Although Ali's successors ruled with a highly authoritarian style, a middle class began to emerge, and both Cairo and Alexandria took on the appearance of a European style metropolis. This became cemented in 1869 with the opening of the Suez Canal. By 1882 Britain occupied Egypt to maintain control of Suez. Despite a revolution in 1919 and the establishment of an independent nation in 1922, Britain ruled by proxy until 1945.
The constitutional monarchy that was established was ultimately upended when a series of scandals by King Farouk caused young army officers to overthrow his government, abolishing the monarchy and thus changing Egypt forever.

Much of the book is devoted to describing and analyzing the leadership of Gamel Abdul Nasser, Anwar Sadat and Hosni Mubarek. Although these successive strongmen shared the fact that they were military men who came to power and maintained their positions largely due to their military connections, they were very different personalities who acted and were perceived by the populace in very different ways. Nasser was dynamic and revolutionary carrying out a socialist and populist doctrine. He became a hero by nationalizing the Suez Canal, and maintained his popularity even after suffering his worst defeat, the Six Day War with Israel. Sadat, although not possessing the charisma of Nasser, did emit a fatherly persona. His support of free market capitalism, peace with Israel and rapprochement with the United States were relatively popular with the populace. Mubarek remained largely a mystery to the Egyptian populace, but was seemingly a competent head bureaucrat who was initially acceptable. It was only when a drop in oil prices forced Mubarek to adopt International Monetary Fund prescriptions that required painful restructuring did his popularity plummet.

Osman successfully weaves into his history the rise of Egyptian Islamists, the rise of Egyptianism, the rise of liberal capitalism, the fluctuating significance of Egyptian Christians, and the ultimate wild card - the huge spurt in the growth of the number of Egyptian youth. The author points out that having 45 million Egyptians under the age of 35, many of them underemployed or unemployed, many who were relatively well educated, most feeling disconnected from their older compatriots was in fact an incendiary device just waiting for a light.

Although not a spot on prediction of what has actually come to pass, the book is full of critical knowledge to better understand what has happened and why. Perhaps even more importantly it gives us a roadmap to predict where it is most likely to impact both Egypt's and the United States' future. Egypt could, as Asman suggests, revive its earlier role as a Mideast power broker filling the vacuum that now exists. This would give Egypt a new prominence in the Mideast while causing the United States and Israel to reassess their geo-political strategies. In any case, what is clear in this pertinent and well-written book is that it is able to bridge the fine line between recent history and tomorrow's newspaper headlines.

The Gift of the Sun: A Tale from South Africa, by Dianne Stewart

In this witty book based on an African folk tale, Thulani prefers sitting in the sun to doing his chores. Tired of milking the cow, he trades her in for a goat. When the goat gets into the corn seed, he trades it for a sheep. Sick of shearing, he buys some geese, which then get exchanged for some sunflower seeds. With each trade, his hard-working wife gets more and more exasperated. Can Thulani redeem himself and still have time for his favorite hobby, doing nothing? Droll text and lively illustrations make this book ideal for repeated readings.

From Publishers Weekly
The South African creators of The Dove turn out a lighthearted story about a husband and wife and their small farm. Trying to reduce his workload so as to spend more time basking in the sun, Thulani decides to sell their cow and buy a goat instead ("I'm tired of all this milking," he says to himself). When the goat eats the couple's entire store of dried corn, Thulani sells it and gets a sheep instead. This sequential tale has the fellow replacing one animal after another, until finally he trades three geese for some sunflower seeds that unexpectedly change the farm's fortunes and cure Thulani of his lazy ways. Kids will be pleased as the story comes satisfyingly full-circle with Thulani's reform effected without any didacticism. Creatively tinkering with traditional perspective and scale, Daly's comically detailed, folk art-like pictures have the same playfulness as Stewart's storytelling. Ages 5-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3?Thulani loves to spend his days sitting in the sun and hates to have his leisure interrupted by chores. Tired of milking the cow, he trades her in for a goat. When the goat gets into the corn seed, he exchanges it for a sheep. When shearing it is too much trouble, he buys some geese. With each trade, his hard-working wife becomes more and more exasperated. Thinking to please her, the man exchanges the geese for a bag of seeds. But when they sprout, Dora is more upset than ever. It seems that he won't ever make her happy. However, when Thulani feeds the sunflower seeds to the chickens, the hens begin to lay more eggs, and, in the end, the story has come full circle. Dora is delighted, and Thulani is now busy trading animals. His favorite time of day is milking time?when he can finally sit down and have a quiet think. Daly's paintings add to the charm of this story. Bright gold end papers scattered with seeds introduce the good-humored mood. The color scheme of soft greens and golds emphasizes the warm pastoral setting. This is a fresh, funny variation on the "Lazy Jack" theme, with illustrations done in a folkart style and filled with little details of South African rural life.?Barbara Kiefer, Teachers College, Columbia University, NY

From Booklist
Ages 3^-6. The South African author and illustrator who did The Dove (1993) again tell a gentle story rooted in folk tradition and contemporary country life. Like many lazy fools, Thulani is well meaning; he wants to please his wife, Dora, but he loves to bask in the sun all day. Milking the cow makes him tired, so he sells the cow and buys a goat. But the goat eats up all the corn seed, so Dora makes him exchange the goat for a sheep, but shearing the sheep tires him out, and so on, until Dora sends him off to buy seed for corn. But the seeds grow into sunflowers, and things seem hopeless until the seeds feed the hens, which lay lots of eggs Thulani can sell to buy a cow. The telling is simple and rhythmic, and Daly's delicate folk-art pictures show wonderfully detailed domestic scenes on the curve of the rolling earth. The pictures extend the connections that are the heart of this funny story. Hazel Rochman

South Africa Lesson Plan
By alj
I purchased this book because I wanted the children to hear a story about another culture. We are learning about South Africa now and conincidentally had just planted sunflower seeds in our garden. The children thought it was funny when Thulani wanted to bask in the sun all day and his wife, Dora, kept coming up with more for him to do.

An amusing tale from South Africa about a man who does everything to please his wife but with each try comes something unforeseen until he mistakenly buys sunflower seeds instead of corn seeds and then his luck changes.

Wonderful book
By jma@ida.liu.se - Jalal Maleki, computer scientist and
I read the Swedish translation of the book in the fall of 1997. This was one of the best childrens books I have read for my 7 year old daughter Kimia. We both liked it. I must admit though that I liked the book more than she did. I had no choice but to start translating it to Persian. I just visited www.amazon.com to purchase the English version of the book.
The message in the book in my opinion is that Thulani is not really lazy. It just appears so. The story shows how an apparently lazy person who aimlessly sits in the sun is a wonderful loving individual full of life, energy and ideas. I'd like to see the story as applicable to most of us humans. We are all full of life, energy and ideas. We just have to try. Hopefully, our love, for someone like Dora, will lead us to the right place and time.
