Forty years ago we learned Dutch or we did not gain access to materials in [Indonesian] Malay, Javanese, or other languages of the Netherlands East Indies. Planning for Indonesia vacation

This English-Indonesian dictionary is a great book to further my knowledge of the Indonesian language, or as it is called in Indonesia, bahasa Indonesia. I have some smaller books on learning the language, but they only have common words and phrases, but this English-Indonesian Dictionary has nearly every word in English that a person could possibly need and has the Indonesian word(s) for it in very descriptive terms. I am planning a great adventure to Indonesia and self-teaching the language. I purchased this book as a "used" item, but when I received it, it was in new condition. Had I not known that I purchased a "used" book, I would have just assumed it to be new, it was in such great condition. Thanks to Amazon and thanks to the seller. Great job!! This is a dissapointing book, the manufacturing and paper is of the lowest quality. I sent mine back. The print is small and not very legible.

This underscores the significance of Jesus' atoning death in the first gospel.

Keri Hulme, a Maori, grew up in Christchurch and Moeraki, New Zealand. She writes, paints, and whitebaits in Okarito, Westland. Hulme has written poems and short stories; The Bone People, originally published by Spiral, a New Zealand feminist collective, is her first novel. She has also written Te Zaihau: The Windeater.

A tough read-in both content and style, but a beautiful one.

An unbelievably beautiful book. A slow read--needs attention and regular re-reads to make sense of it. The characters simply keep unfolding and blooming. You feel you could fall into them forever. The ending is both heartbreaking and up-lifting. Yes, yes, yes, I loved it.

Provocative and Well Done

If you had problems with Joyce's Ulysses or Finnegan, this book will present a similar challenge, though more readable once you get used to the flow. Hulme is a brilliant, creative writer with a strong sense of narrative and the importance of detail presented with the sensibility and craftsmanship of a poet. Once you catch the drift of each character having an inner and an outer voice, as well as the usual good and bad selves at war within each of us, it becomes easier. Hulme is a spontaneous writer, but mostly careful in her use of punctuation to give you guidance to these voices. It will take reading the whole book to even begin to see the way Keri Hulme gathers, merges, and presents Maori and Celtic spirituality as simply another expression of all human condition. As a reader, I found myself questioning what was real, what was dream, what was afterlife, and how these various states are part of everything we do every day. It was interesting, beautiful, thought and debate provoking, a classic in my sense of the word, which means it is one of the books I intend to reread at least two more times before I depart this world --- if I ever do based on my reading of The Bone People.

Trying too hard to win a prize rather than writing a good novel.

The author appears to have set out to win some sort of literary prize by hitting all the current touch-points; a story about a minority group, a socially unacceptable behavior, and an unusual language use. The result is an annoying book about awful people. If you want to pretend you are socially relevant this is the book for you. If you read for beautifully crafted language with a believable story line stay far away from the nonsense contained here.

Following a stirring preface by William Lloyd Garrison (who, nearly 20 years after he first met Douglass, would himself lead the black troops fighting from the North in the Civil War), the not-yet-30-year-old author recounts his life's story, showing effective and evocative use of language as well as unflinchingly examining many aspects of the Peculiar Institution of American Slavery. Douglass attributes his road to freedom as beginning with his being sent from the Maryland plantation of his birth to live in Baltimore as a young boy. There, he learned to read and, more importantly, learned the power of literacy. In early adolescence, he was returned to farm work, suffered abuse at the hands of cruel overseers, and witnessed abuse visited on fellow slaves. He shared his knowledge of reading with a secret "Sunday school" of 40 fellow slaves during his last years of bondage. In his early 20's, he ran away to the North and found refuge among New England abolitionists. Douglass, a reputed orator, combines concrete description of his circumstances with his own emerging analysis of slavery as a condition. This recording makes his rich work available to those who might feel encumbered by the printed page and belongs as an alternative in all school and public library collections.

This autobiography was assigned to me when I was a junior in high school. Three years later, as a sophomore in college, I was asked to read the book again for my class on Black Thought and Literature. I wish that I had taken the time to slow down and analyze Frederick Douglass' narrative from a literal, analytical, and figurative perspective. Had I done that the first time around—as opposed to treating the book as another required reading that I needed to speed-read through—I believe that my understanding would have been more in-depth and meaningful. The emotion and conviction with which the author writes is not only poetic and moving, but captivating as well. The imagery, combined with Douglass' views on religion's role in the enslavement of black bodies, masterfully paints a story that (in combination with other narratives) has, unfortunately, been lost throughout time. In fact, many Black writers during this period refused to publish their experiences for fear that they will be caught and returned to slavery. In other cases, some writers used pen names to add some anonymity to their experiences. Nevertheless, such works should be cherished and valued; for they allow us to gain a better understanding of how far our society has come, and how much more needs to be done to ensure a future where everyone is equal (in the truest sense of the word).

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl

The Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs related the life and hardships of one young girl through adulthood. It relates how the slaves were thought of (as nothing but someone to live and serve the white people) Their lives were dependent on the white owners and this girl, with the help of her family, hid out for 7 long years to avoid the advances of her white doctor owner and his jealous wife and family who refused to sell her or give her freedom. Through the long years of hiding in her grandma's attic and then the chance to be smuggled to Boston. Even living in the North she had the fear of being caught and returned to the South. She raised her family by herself but still had the fear of her old master taking even her children away from her. This is a different insight on the life of the slave and is very interesting and well told.

Refreshing and eye opening. Douglass spares no details on the cruelty and evilness of slavery. Interestingly, Douglass focuses just as much on the impact slavery had on the psychological being of the slave owner as he does the impact slavery had on the slaves themselves. Do yourself a favor and read this narrative. You will not regret it.

Excellent content; outdated photos

We loved this book, and definitely give it 5 stars for content and for the conversations it initiated! As with all things, you get what you put in, but we really appreciated the discussions it brought forward! Having tried lots of marriage books, this was our favorite one to work through together (with "Sacred Marriage" being our favorite to read and discuss). The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because it's definitely an older book (it would benefit from being republished) with really outdated photos; my brother got married after we did, and is in interracial marriage. while I normally recommend this book to all engaged couples, I felt I had to warn him before recommending this one, as the photos - while racially diverse - are all of same-race couples.

I used this Wright and Roberts workbook several years ago in pre-marital counseling with couples and was delighted to find it again. I prefer to use it as a pre-engagement workbook and challenge couples to consider if they really ARE a good match. Marriage should be a "for as long as we both shall live" union but it has become so much less for some. The same workbook can be used for those who have having struggles in their marriage because the issues that usually give couples trouble are dealt with here. What marriage is, the expectations individuals have of marriage and their partner, money and sex and family and children and the commitment to one another needed to weather storms that life brings are dealt with in this workbook. I heartily commend it to anyone considering becoming engaged--before all the wedding plans are discussed and while you might still gracefully say "No" or "Not just yet" to your best friend or family members--to those who are already engaged and even to those who are already married. These topics are always good reminders about how to be the best marriage partner I can be--even for those married 20 or 50 years.

Of course, the Amazon service was fantastic--the workbooks were at my door within about three days, well ahead of my expectations--so my thanks to Amazon for continued high performance.

depends on mood your in when you read it?

the entire series is okay, to good,, i read all the books so definitely liked the story. still i found myself feeling like it was dragging several times. plot kind of choppy,, but moves steadily forward. the characters do feel very one dimensional , with some hints of more fully developed. a few characters never quite sure what side they align with? i guess all i can say is, its okay, held my interest, glad i read it, and left me feeling mediocre about the book, series in general.. its not a five, may be a three, so went with four. this one, its up to you, personal taste will make huge difference how you experience this book, series.

Where Are My Powers?

Alycia has come a long way towards her writing skills, if you didn't give up on the distracting grammar of the earlier books in the Elemental and Tainted Element Series'. The story lines were intriguing enough to endure those days, but now they are cleaner, there does seem to be a hastiness to jump into and in wrapping up the situations the heroine encounters. Nonetheless, the stories are interesting. When I am at idle thought, I sometimes wonder why my powers don't work. I guess the stories affect me, which is a good thing.

I chose this rating because this book really amazed me. I could read these books for hours and hours! This series is possibly the best series of books I have ever read. I definitely recommend this book to young adults searching for a really thrilling and adventurous story about a girl with amazing abilities who is willing to save the world.
