Good study tool

Purchased to study for building inspector exam. This is an effective way to prepare for the exam. However, we have discovered 2 errors in the workbook's answers. I recommend making sure the answers make sense, and looking up the code section to confirm answers.

PREFACE

The field of police administration is dynamic and ever changing. Laws are modified, new problems occur, and administrative practices that were once accepted as gospel are challenged, modified, and in some cases, discarded. In this edition, as with the previous four editions, we have tried to provide the most current and useful information to the reader in an effort to help them deal with these dynamic forces and the ever-changing environment of police work.

Collectively the three authors have been police officers, detectives, administrators, and educators for over eighty years. We have studied, practiced, researched, taught, and consulted on police administration and an inevitable by-product of these experiences is the development of certain perspectives. It is these perspectives that form the rationale for this book.

There is much new information in this book the reader will find informative and useful. For example, Chapter Two, Community Policing is a new chapter which focuses on the impact of community policing on police administration. We also discuss the expanded coverage of the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS). In Chapter 3, Politics and Police Administration there is an expanded discussion on the issues of police brutality and scandal as well as discussions of militias, right-wing groups in the United States and school violence. In Chapter 8, Human Resource Management we discuss the arguments presented in favor of requiring a college education for police applicants as well as arguments presented by some groups opposing college education for police applicants. Also in this chapter we have added new material on the Administration of Discipline, Internal Affairs Units, and Retirement Counseling. In Chapter 9, Stress and Police Personnel we have expanded our discussion on police suicide and address in considerable detail the phenomenon known as Suicide by Cop (SbC), Stress and the Female Police Officer and Police Domestic Violence. In Chapter 11, Legal Aspects of Police Administration there is a feature on the now infamous New York City Abner Louima case and its impact along with a discussion of several other high profile cases that have occurred in recent years in New York City. There is also a discussion of a recent Supreme Court decision which limits liability for injuries and deaths associated with high speed police pursuit as well as an update and expanded discussion of sexual harassment in the workplace. In Chapter 12, Planning and Decision Making, we have provided updated material on the investigation of the Branch Davidian Seige in Waco, Texas, focusing on the potential coverup and misuse of military personnel during the engagement.

As with all previous editions, we have attempted to provide newspaper clippings, case studies and vignettes from our own experience. These are scattered throughout to illustrate points discussed in the narrative in order to make them more informative and interesting.

I had to study this book for an upper management promotion test with a major police department. Although some of the material wasn't relevant to my department, it did have a lot of information that was useful. The book is an easy read for the most part and the chapter reviews were very useful. I would recommend a study guide. By the way...I passed the test.

Decent book, good theory...

... But 8th editions need relentless editorial review and checks for consistencies. Too many minor errors and inconsistencies to merit that fifth star. These authors know their books are being used for promotional tests... So lots of lists and lots of qualifiers. This is all part of the industry... Aggravating, but part of the game. The book covers the main theories and provides a solid general introduction to Police Administration.

Of course, desire is always tempered by reality; therefore how democratic demands are made manifest is a critical source of study for both political scientists and foreign policy makers. What issues and consequences surround the fall of a government, what type of regime replaces it, and to what extent are these efforts successful? Kathryn Stoner and Michael McFaul have created an accessible book of fifteen case studies from around the world that will help students understand these complex issues. Their model builds upon Guillermo O’Donnell, Philippe C. Schmitter, and Laurence Whitehead's classic work, Transitions from Authoritarian Rule, using a rubric of four identifying factors that can be applied to each case study, making comparison relatively easy.

Transitions to Democracy yields strong comparisons and insights. For instance, the study reveals that efforts led by the elite and involving the military are generally unsuccessful, whereas mass mobilization, civic groups, and new media have become significant factors in supporting and sustaining democratic actors. This collection of writings by scholars and practitioners is organized into three parts: successful transitions, incremental transitions, and failed transitions. Extensive primary research and a rubric that can be applied to burgeoning democracies offer readers valuable tools and information.

Kathryn Stoner is a senior fellow, Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, deputy director of the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law, and faculty director of the Susan Ford Dorsey Program in International Policy Studies at Stanford University. Michael McFaul the Peter and Helen Bing Sr. Fellow at the Hoover Institution and a professor of political pcience at Stanford University. Previously he served as senior director for Russia in the National Security Council of President Barack Obama. He was appointed the United States Ambassador to the Russian Federation in January 2012.

Make the transition to ES6 with help from a proven author and master teacher

The JavaScript we will write in a couple of years will look completely different than what we have come to know. We need help to make the transition. This book from a proven author and master teacher is a great way to begin.

The proper way to read this book is to study only a few pages per day. Experiment with the exercises not just to see them run, but until you really understand each new language feature. Iterate until it sinks in. Revisit earlier pages, and study, study, study.

You will need an ES6 execution environment. Node.js, BabelJS, and TypeScript serve well with expanding support for ES6 language features.

There will soon be a distinction in our industry between basic JavaScript coders and those with advanced understanding of ES6 and beyond. If you wish to be a member of the second set, and you are willing to work at it, this fine book will help you achieve that distinction.

ES6 is mind-bending. You can read this book in a weekend. But you should study this book for a year.

Crisp and Clear

Probably the best of the series. Tightly written, yet still clear. And I was pleasantly surprised to find very little of Kyle's JavaScript idiosyncrasies present: he very clearly and honestly argued the pro's and con's of the "controversial" features like class and fat arrow. His recommendation to *only* use arrows when you want a lexical this—as opposed to when you want a lexical this, or don't need *any* this—was a bit odd, but it in no way detracted from the overall quality of the book.

Excellent coverage, but struggles with format, sometimes excessive examples.

This book does a pretty great job at covering the new inclusions in ES2015 (aka ES6). While I hadn't read any of the previous entries in the series (I have subsequently), it wasn't difficult to follow. There were a few examples that could've been pared down but were instead approached from every angle. Some developers may appreciate this, some may not. I found myself skipping ahead in some parts after I felt I had a thorough understanding of the material.

I do wish the publishers/editors had made more of an effort to ensure code samples stopped and resumed on following pages in a better way. There were a number of times where a single variable would be declared at the end of one page, turn the page, and more declared on the following page. This made it (occasionally) difficult to remember what a variable was in the example.

Overall, this is a great overview of ES2015 and I'm sure will give experienced developers a quick read of the material.
