I have Vladimir Dobrushkin as a professor for this course at Brown, and he is amazing. He is very thorough, and is extremely intelligent. This book will provide you with a comprehensive education in the field of differential equations, and is much better than other textbooks on the market.

Can't go wrong with this book, Dobrushkin

This book, an update of the vaunted Boyce & DiPrima work, has been a seminal part of my differential equations education. Prof. Dobrushkin is a wonderful mentor to many at Brown, and he applies a similar style of mentorship/apprenticeship to this course. I'd highly recommend the textbook to any advanced math student looking to expand his/her differential equations skill set.

Review--not!

Why is this book so prohibitively expensive? Who can afford these prices other than libraries and scholars affiliated with universities? Might there not be more of a demand for such critical studies if they were priced within the reach ordinary individuals? I would have liked to have read and owned this book but with an elitist price tag, I am effectively shut out. I cannot, therefore, render a review until (or when) my local library obtains a copy of it through ILL.

Interesante cada biograf�a presentada

En el Closet (Spanish Edition)

Guadalupe Loaeza a trav�s de esta obra nos proporciona una excelente lectura para el entretenimiento de un fin de semana. La obra compila las biograf�as de diversos personajes, principalmente de EUA, Hispanoam�rica y Francia.

La obra est� dividida de acuerdo al �mbito profesional de los personajes:

1. Detr�s de la puerta... la imagen, donde encontraremos 15 biograf�as de personas p�blicas principalmente con el medio art�stico: cantantes, actores, m�sicos, compositores, etc.; Ignacio de la Torre, Sara Garc�a y Ram�n Gay.

2. Los ojos como espejos, contiene 8 biograf�as de personalidades del medio arquitect�nico, moda y escultura. Entramos a Juan Soriano, Yves Saint Laurent, entre otros.

3. Palabras como balas, contiene 18 biograf�as de poetas y escritores. En esta parte nos encontramos con Federico Garc�a Lorca, Gabriela Mistral, Carlos Pellicer y Carlos Monsiv�is.

4. Una m�sica m�s �ntima contiene 5 biograf�as de m�sicos y compositores: Cole Porter y Liberace.

La obra cierra con la historia de Marcela y Mario, dos mujeres que contrajeron matrimonio en 1901 en Espa�a.

Algunos trabajos biogr�ficos son m�s interesantes por los elementos que lo conforman pues Loaeza los enriquece con detalles, especialmente los trabajos de los escritores, pues presenta breves citas para develar el misterio detr�s del personaje. No en todas las biograf�as se presentan evidencias o referencias.

Me gusta que su tabla de contenidos pues se puede acceder f�cilmente a una biograf�a en particular.

He leido casi toda la obra de la Loaeza, me gusta su manera de narrar historias de una forma desenfadada y a veces hasta light, se que no pasara a la historia como una de las mas grandes escritoras de m�xico pero como siempre aporta su manera de ver las cosas. En estas p�ginas se hace un recorrido por las vidas de los homosexuales m�s influyentes en la cultura y la historia. Hay que decir que se trata de un reconocimiento a su inteligencia, a su influencia en la sociedad y en la cultura, pero sobre todo a su valor; no hay que olvidar que muchos de ellos son personajes que a pesar de las �pocas de represi�n en que han vivido, pudieron llevar una vida abierta y fuera del cl�set. A Jew in Czechoslovakia under the Nazis, Kovaly spent the war years in the Lodz ghetto and several concentration camps, losing her family and barely surviving herself. Returning to Prague at the end of the war, she married an old friend, a bright, enthusiastic young Jewish economist named Rudolf Margolius, who saw the country's only hope for the future in the Communist Party. Thereafter, Rudolf became deputy minister for foreign trade. For a time, the Margoliuses lived like royalty, albeit reluctantly, but then, in a replay of the Stalinist purges of the 1930s, Rudolf and others, mostly of Jewish background, were arrested and hung in the infamous Slansky Trial of 1952. Kovaly's memoir of these years that end with her emigration to the West after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 are a tragic story told with aplomb, humor and tenderness. The reader alternately laughs and cries as Kovaly describes her mother being sent to death by Dr. Mengele, Czech Communist Party leader Klement Gottwald drunk at a reception, the last sight of her husband, the feverish happiness of the Prague Spring. Highly recommended.

An exceptionally intimate and poignant memoir by a Czechoslovakian exile. Kovaly, a Jew, was forcibly deported to a Nazi labor camp in the early days of German occupation. A spirited woman, she not only survived the camp but returned to Prague to wed her childhood sweetheart, Rudolf Margolius. Though their fortunes rose in the postwar era, Rudolf eventually lost his life in the Stalinist purges of the early Fifties, leaving Heda to face life as a nonperson. Kovaly's recollections of her life during the purges form the core of the book and convey with brutal clarity the magnitude of suffering inflicted on thousands of Czechs. Barely Surviving as an Enemy of the State

In UNDER A CRUEL STAR, Heda Margolius Kovaly tells of her experiences in Czechoslovakia from 1941 through 1968. To simplify somewhat, the phases of these experiences are: 1) Heda, the only survivor in her family of the Nazi concentration camps, establishes a normal postwar life; 2) Heda, a young illustrator, wife, and mother, provides emotional support for her husband Rudolf, who is a hardworking idealist committed to socialism; 3) the communist government of Czechoslovakia forces Heda and her wee son to live as impoverished pariahs after Rudolf, who was the deputy minister of foreign trade, is executed following a show trial; 4) more than a decade after Rudolf's death, the government recants all charges against him, vindicating the loyal Heda, who never doubted her husband's innocence; and 5) Heda experiences the spirit of humane socialism--the vision of her murdered husband--in the brief Prague Spring.

Since UaCS is a memoir, Heda's content is mostly the story of her personal and professional interactions. Much of this content is bleak, since only a few ordinary people--a nanny and a salt-of-the-earth neighbor--stand by Heda when times are bad. Instead, Heda's troubles seemed to bring out the worst in her friends and colleagues. After she escapes from Auschwitz, for example, most of her friends are cowardly and will not shield her from the Nazis. And after her husband is arrested, Heda copes with severe illness alone, her social network in collapse.

UaCS is a successful memoir because Kovaly connects her own experiences to larger themes. These are life under an oppressive and incompetent government and the treachery that emerges as people maneuver within this political system for personal safety and material gain. At its best, this memoir is a dark and bottom-up view of life behind the Iron Curtain.

At times, Kovaly writes with great insight, especially about the idealists who stayed with communism even as the system revealed itself to be ineffective, corrupt, and oppressive. I won't say this is the best memoir I've ever read. But it's good and tells the story of a woman who resisted totalitarianism with great courage, dignity, and decency.

A moving first hand account of life under the most difficult political regimes.

I can't say that I found this to be an enjoyable book, but that is due to the subject matter. Ms. Kovaly led a life full of twists and turns and heartbreak and trials. The Generation which lived in the Eastern European nations between the 40's to the mid-60's had to live through both Nazi occupation and then the rise of Communism in their countries. And, as you would expect, if you were Jewish it was infinitely worse.
Ms Kovaly tells of first of time in Nazi camps, her excape, the struggle to rebuild individual lives after the war, and then the turn by many to Communism as a reaction to what they had just been through with the Nazi's. All in all, a well written and poignant account of one person's life under these most horrifying of circumstances. Definitely recommended.

Ms. Kovaly has written a very valuable autobiographical book. As a Jewish Czech coming of age in the 1940's she has had quite a life. She was Nazi concentration camp inmate, a refugee from the Nazis at the end of World War II, a resident of Prague, Czechoslovakia, and witness to the end of World War II and the rise of the Communist Party to power in that country. She was married to a Communist Party member who was also one of the top officials of the Czechoslovakian government and who was later purged and executed in the 1953 so called Slansky plot. And her autobiographical book is very well written with very intelligent and observant descriptions of both her thoughts and feelings and the milieu surrounding her. Ms. Kovaly describes the dependence and limited sense of the future of the Nazi concentration camp inmates, the struggles and the renewed sense of false hope of her friends and herself in postwar Prague, and the past catastrophes, false hopes, and ongoing pressures that led to the rise of communism in Czechoslovakia. Also written about is her life as an illustrator in the increasingly Stalinist country. She also describes the heart rendering problems she faced when her husband was executed.

The reader can only be very happy that Ms. Kovaly was able to survive and overcome her ordeals and be able to write about her life. It should also be mentioned that besides a wife and a mother Ms. Kovaly was an illustrator, translator, and librarian with a very intelligent interest in architecture and the fine arts.

This book is an excellent and invaluable historical description of post World War II and Stalinist Czechoslovakia. No student of European history student should miss this work. And for the general reader this book is a must read. The book is a very well written account of survival under very difficult circumstances.

Put aside your presuppositions and let the evidence speak for itself

It seems that the previous reviewer is an individual who is sadly unwilling, or unable, to put aside their evolutionist presuppositions and give the evidence a chance. Evolution is a house of cards built on flimsy "science" that often contradicts its own precepts. If one is willing to analyze the evidence without evolutionary presuppositions that demand billions of years to make their theory even remotely plausible (though it is still obviously flawed- just consider that science has never been able to produce even a single-celled organism from non-living matter despite their best efforts, or that the only variation that we see on earth is the result of different combinations of pre-existing information already written in a particular organism's genetic code rather than from the chance evolution of any new genetic information), then the individual will have to, at the very least, admit that the argument for creation and a young earth is plausible, if not downright convincing. For those who are willing to think for themselves, rather than blindly accepting the blatant evolutinary propaganda of our day, this book will give you a plausible alternative theory (though I would argue it is fact as I acknowledge my own presuppositions-it is just that I have concluded through study that the idea of a Creator is much more consistant with the evidence we see around us than the idea of mindless, chance mutation somehow explaining the existance and the complexity of life) that will challenge you to consider why you believe what you believe. For those who are truly open to considering the evidence, you may even find that it will convince you of the validity of the young earth creationist viewpoint. Adults should be able to debate the issue without resorting to name-calling and overt disdain for those who disagree with them.

Bon Appetit!

Bon Appetit! I've been a big fan of Julia Child for years, and I've wanted her cookbook since 2008. If you're hosting a dinner party, get this cookbook and you'll be solid. You'll be loved by all your dinner guests, because the recipes in this book produce delicious, mouthwatering meals. Everything is written out in detail, from the measurements to the step-by-step instructions. I think that if you have a willingness and passion to learn, you'll be fine. You don't need to necessarily be a young, aspiring Mario Batali or Julia Child to master this cookbook. Personally speaking, the instructions are well-written so that anyone can follow them. For example, I tried the classic boeuf bourguignon and it was a raving success and I'm definitely not a professional. For those who want to go on a French culinary adventure, I highly recommend grabbing a copy of Mastering the Art.

So you think you can cook....

Who would have believed that I did not know how to cook? Well, I found out that I didn't. Heck, I am a good cook who serves tasty and healthy dinners, but they are so BORING!! Every cookbook I read, whether it is the local "church" or best seller or online recipe or older books all have the same recipes. I mean they are different from one another by a pinch of this or an addition of that but they all end up tasting the same. You can go to any covered dish get together and find that all the same dishes have been prepared that taste pretty much alike and I don't care how long you have been cooking. BUT now wait, this book, this excellent book takes you where you have never been before or tasted before! It is a bit of a time consuming effort in some cases, but it is WORTH every minute. It is not hard to follow the instructions for a perfect bit of art. I thought I knew beef stew, it all tastes the same every where, but not this exciting recipe with red wine and small little onions that I had never heard of before. Magnificent! I am retired and at least once a month I prepare something wonderful from this book and you can, too. It is definitely worth it!

No fooling. If you want to learn to cook and cook well, you must have this book in your library, period. Along with Harold McGee's On Food & Cooking, and James Beard's American Cookery, this is a learning tool you need. No other cookbook translates the heart of French cookery to the American kitchen as well as this one, even now, some 50+ years after it was first written.

About the Author

David Allan is a Distinguished Engineer at Ericsson and a former Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Nortel. He is the holder of some thirty patents in telecommunications, including several for the co-invention of technology fundamental to 802.1aq and 802.1Qay. In addition, he co-chairs the End-to-End Architecture Committee of the Broadband Forum, which recently honored him as a Distinguished Fellow.

Nigel Bragg has spent twenty years in the telecommunications industry, thirteen of them with Nortel—where he was elected a Nortel Fellow in 2008—before joining Ciena where he works on packet transport and Carrier Ethernet technologies. He holds over thirty patents and is a co-inventor of PBT and PLSB, the pre-standard predecessors of PBB-TE and SPBM.

Thin book, rich content

This book explains what SPB is, why it matters, and how it fits, both into operators' networks and into the other 802.1 standards. And that's just on the first two pages of the introduction. Extremely well-written, but extremely dense, this thin book is not for the beginner. If you already understand Ethernet and IP routing reasonably well, and are prepared to put in the work necessary to connect the dots, this book is highly to be recommended.
