About the Author

Buchi Emecheta, born in Lagos in Nigeria, won a scholarship to the Methodist Girls' High School, but by the time she was seventeen she had left school, married and had a child. �She accompanied her husband to London where, at 22, she left him, and took an honours degree in Sociology while supporting her five children and writing in the early morning.

She haw written sevearl books including, In The Ditch, Second-Class Citizen, The Bride Price, The Slave Girl, which was awarded the Jock Campbell Award, The Joys of Motherhood, Destination Biafra, Naira Power, Double Yoke, Gwendolen, The Rape of Shavi and Kehinde, as well as a number of children's books and a play, A Kind of Marriage produced on BBC television. Her autobiography, Head Above Water, appeared in 1986 to much acclaim.

The present book is the written version of the lectures given during the Les Houches summer school session on "Complex Systems", devoted to these emerging interdisciplinary fields. The lectures consist both in a number of long methodological courses (probability theory, statistical physics of disordered systems, information theory, network structure and evolution, agent-based economics and numerical methods) and more specific, 'problem oriented' courses. Lecturers are all leading experts in their field; they have summarized recent results in a clear and authoritative manner. The "Les Houches lecture notes" have a long tradition of excellence and are often found to be useful for a number of years after they were written.

A long awaited book for the great Tompall Glaser

I am fascinated by Tompall Glaser but could never find much information about him or his music... this book solved that! This book is written extremely well by Kevin Glaser and is not one sided in anyway. Letters from Tompalls army days made me feel quite sad and gave me a totally different view of Tompall. I have always believed he was the most underrated country singer we have known and could never understand why he never made it as big as Waylon and Willie. From reading this book it has opened my eyes more to what Tompall actually did for country music and helping others singers with their music, breaking down barriers and standing up for other musicians. Basically put others music before his own.
Stories from hillbilly central are very informative and amusing to read, you get to know what the Great Tompall was really like, good and bad. Towards the end of the book stories from his touring days in England are described in great detail giving a more private side to Tompall. I still find it hard to believe the County Music Hall of Fame has not yet recognised Tompall and using the address given in the back of the book I will be contacting them with my opinions.
If you love Tompalls music as I do this book is a total gem for your collection. If you have never heard of him track down some CDs or vinyl and enjoy his beautiful voice. I listen to Tompalls music everyday and am delighted I have this wonderful book in my Tompall collection.

TOMPALL WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN BY HIS MANY FANS

This book is a special addition to my book collection. Tompall was a multi-talented entertainer and was blessed with a magnificent voice and song writing skills. This book encompasses the life of Tompall and the pictures were a welcome part to his life story. When he sang, you could see a sparkle in his eyes and smile on his face that revealed how much he loved music and enjoyed singing. It was delightful when he performed solo numbers, and when he sang with his brothers, Chuck and Jim, country music was at its best because their harmony was pure magic! The book gives the reader many details of Tompall's life and career that were unknown in the past. It also brings forth the various singers, musicians, and songwriters that played a significent role in his lifetime. His life was colorful and successful, and his passing left a void in country music that can never be replaced or forgotten. This book is definite a "must read" for each of his countless fans, who will keep his music thriving. Jo Anne Behrens

It was a very interesting and informative book. Kevin did a great job. I enjoyed every minute
I spent reading it! It's the kind of book that will probably be read over and over. I loved Tompall's music, with his
brothers, and solo. He was one of the best singers I have ever listened to, and a very interesting person. I'm so glad I was able to see him in concert and visit with him on several occasions. Thank you Kevin for writing this, and to everyone who contributed to it. For everyone who enjoys Tompall's music, this should be required reading.

Was hesitant at first but seeing results

I bought this book more than a year ago on the suggestion of a conjure man. When it arrived I felt it was not for me because it is rooted in Christian reference and so didn't see how it fit in my African centered spirit practic, bone headed right when one thinks of candomble, santeria, voudoun, shango Baptist practice, hoodoo and the like. Well recently and quite unexpectedly the book expanded my spiritual practice. I was directed to use a prayer and it was answered (the hoped for situation manifested) practically immediately. I used another prayer and the situation that I prayed about became favorable to me. This is just a beginning. I will update on the efficacy of future prayer work as I am now actively using the book in my practice.

Book was in great condition. I tried using one of the psalm methods and recieved the money I needed quickly. This book is not just about trying to get but about having inner peace and blessing and just money. This book uses basic hoodoo or just lets you just read the psalms out for your need, preace, and blessing. Eiether way, what makes this work is the supernatural power of the word of God and your faith. It just takes simple faith and the word. I am a christian and this book is not bad or anti christian.

The book is Great- I had an old one which was falling apart. On the copy I purchased through Amazon it appears that this is the one millionth printing as the ink is soooo light that it is hardly legible. If there were a link on my account to return it I would and purchase it from B&N. Shame on you Amazon- I expect better quality materials from you.

Learning to trust: the making of a preacher

This is another searching story by Hesba Stretton. Everything I've read that she has written has touched my spirit, and caused me to look at my character and my relationship with Christ, and to see if it is what it should be.

Enoch Roden lived with his mother, grandmother, and older brother. They were poor, but his mother Susan managed to bring in enough for their subsistence with her washing. Things were looking up, however. Enoch was apprenticed to a printer, and the young boy expected to be able to take care of his family. This printer had employed Susan as his daughters' nurse when they were little. However, though the printer trusted in God, he neglected to provide for his family, and went bankrupt, dying shortly afterward. His older daughter became a governess, though bitterly resenting her father's lack of care, and the younger girl went to live with the Rodens. Enoch's older brother saw Lucy's entrance into their family as the last straw, and ran off to the sea. Through it all, Susan showed a dependence on God, and joy lit her life from her trust in Him.

Enoch looked for work, but could not find any. He was trusting in himself to provide for his family, and was angry with God for not providing a job. Susan suffered an injury and was confined to bed, and in her time of healing lost all her customers. They could not afford to live, so Susan's mother-in-law went to live in the workhouse. This was a struggle for everyone, as the grandmother had had too much pride do live there before, Susan and Enoch considered it a disgrace to themselves that she should have to, and everyone would miss her. Lucy encouraged everyone to look to their heavenly Father, and to trust that He would still care for them all. Enoch finally found work, but he did not make much, and was bitter that God did not take better care of His own, since they were trusting in Him.

Enoch eventually came to see that he was not trusting the Lord, and that He was providing, if not in the way Enoch desired and expected. In the end, everything is pulled together. The lost son at sea returns home with a changed heart, Enoch learns lessons in trusting, and even Esther, Lucy's older sister, comes to know that the Lord does indeed love and care for His own. After the surprise at the end, Enoch tells his mother and Lucy how he compared himself to the Israelites who murmured against God. God had provided manna for their sustenance, but they were ungrateful because it was not what they wanted and complained, "What is this?" I cried when I read his words: how true they are! When he finished speaking, he found that he had a larger audience than he had thought, who considered it his first sermon.

The last chapter tells of the same characters many years later. As Enoch began to preach to an "official" congregation, they reflected on their past, and on Enoch Roden's training for service.
